Chemistry

Chemistry

  • About
  • Beyond the Classroom

Chemistry is a hugely popular subject at Hampton. Pupils study Chemistry as a separate science from the start of the First Year, with all boys taking GCSE Chemistry in Fifth Year and a significant proportion of boys electing to continue with Chemistry into the Sixth Form.

In 2023, 14 Hamptonians left to study Chemistry-related degrees (Chemistry, Biochemistry and Natural Sciences).

The Department consists of three laboratory technicians and eleven teachers, all of whom convey their passion for this wonderful subject through intellectually stimulating and engaging courses.

Our young chemists excel in many areas: in GCSE examinations the vast majority of pupils achieved a grade 9-7 in 2023, with over 100 pupils scoring the top grade 9. The boys regularly receive Gold and Silver certificates in national competitions such as the Chemistry Olympiad and the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.

Aims of Chemistry Department

  • To stimulate curiosity and enjoyment in Chemistry
  • To provide a supportive learning environment which will enable all Chemistry pupils to achieve examination results of which they can be proud, and allow them to proceed to the next stage of their education
  • To convey the wonder of Chemistry and its intrinsic importance to the world we live in

Chemistry Department Facilities

Hampton pupils enjoy the benefits of ten fully equipped, specialist laboratories. Practical work is at the forefront of everything we do in the department and we aim to maximise the boys’ practical experience.

Support and Extension

Lunchtime ‘grade booster’ sessions are offered to GCSE and Sixth Form pupils should they wish to get extra guidance and support. Additionally, a full programme of Extension Classes are run for Fourth Year, Fifth Year and Sixth Form Hamptonians.

Co-Curricular

Hampton’s chemists take part in a number of national events and competitions and regularly excel in the Chemistry Race, Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and the Chemistry Olympiad. Each year the department takes a group of Lower Sixth pupils to the University of Southampton to undertake undergraduate practical work.

For our Lower School pupils we run Chemistry Club, which offers Hamptonians the chance to carry out many enjoyable experiments, and Chemistry Project Club, where Second and Third pupils get the chance to do an extended piece of investigative work over several weeks.

Discover Hampton – Building Batteries in Chemistry

In this episode we join Mr Schofield teaching our young chemists how to build batteries. Around since 1799, batteries are everywhere in our day-to-day life and battery technology is key to moving away from fossil fuels for transportation and power generation – an essential topic for all our young chemists.
