Every boy at Hampton is encouraged to fulfil his full musical potential. There are opportunities to perform at every level within the School, nationally and internationally. Pupil performances are of an exceptional standard due to the motivation and commitment of the Music Staff and the skills and abilities of the boys themselves. We are delighted that Hampton is now an All-Steinway School and every pupil has the opportunity to rehearse and perform on Steinway instruments.
The Hammond Theatre
The Hammond Theatre is a concert venue to rival any school in the country. Designed to seat an audience of 380 people it offers a professional standard platform for Hampton boys to showcase their musical ability. The specialist acoustic panels create a warm, reverberant atmosphere suited to all types of music making. The Hammond Theatre also has an orchestra pit, making it ideal for musical theatre.
The Garrick Building
Music is taught in the ‘Garrick’, a purpose built and recently refurbished music facility. It accommodates:
- The Music Hall, a large rehearsal and teaching space which is equipped with 13 iMacs and a Steinway grand piano
- The Keyboard Room with 26 Yamaha keyboards set up for individual use
- Two further rooms for teaching with 26 further iMacs
- 10 practice rooms for individual instrumental lessons, including a drum room and orchestral percussion suite
The Music Department is well provided with private tuition and practice rooms. There are specialist rooms for ensemble and choral rehearsals in the theatre, as well as the recently refurbished Garrick Building.
Music and choral Scholarships
The School offers a number of Music and Choral scholarships, further details can be found below:
The Department runs regular trips both in the UK and abroad. These include; a chamber music course in October at various locations, a triennial orchestral exchange with the Heinrich-Suso Gymnasium School from Konstanz, Germany, and in most years we run an international tour for the different ensembles.
Hampton has a thriving Music Society run by parents to support the Music Department by helping at concerts, and providing financial help for special projects. The most recent of these projects is the ‘Rare Beasts’ scheme, which supports new boys at Hampton who wish to take up an instrument which is less common at School (for example, the Bassoon or the French Horn).
All concerts are open to parents and friends of the School.
Ensembles & choirs
Hampton School runs a wide range of Ensembles and Choirs suited to all levels and all styles of music making.
The provision of Chamber Music is fundamental to the life of the Department, and is strongly supported.
In addition, there are a number of rock bands, and the Department is committed to providing them with time and facilities to rehearse.
