Our facilities
The Hammond Theatre is a concert venue to rival any school in the country. Designed to seat an audience of 380 people it offers a professional standard platform for Hamptonians to showcase their musical ability. The specialist acoustic panels create a warm, reverberant atmosphere suited to all types of music making. The Hammond Theatre also has an orchestra pit, making it ideal for musical theatre.
The Music Department is situated in The Garrick, a purpose built music facility named after 18th Century actor and theatre producer David Garrick, who lived nearby next to the River Thames and was an early trustee of the School.
The School has a wide range of practice rooms, most of which are equipped with a Steinway piano, for individual instrumental and vocal lessons, including a drum room and orchestral percussion suite.
The Music Hall is a large rehearsal and teaching space, equipped with 13 iMacs and a Steinway grand piano.
Pupils have access to a keyboard Room with 26 Yamaha keyboards set up for individual use, plus two further rooms for teaching with 26 additional iMacs.
Clubs, Trips & Tuition
MUSIC AND CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The School offers a number of Music and Choral scholarships, further details can be found below:
TOURS
The Department runs regular trips both in the UK and abroad. These include; a chamber music course in October at various locations, a triennial orchestral exchange with the Heinrich-Suso Gymnasium School from Konstanz, Germany, and in most years we run an international tour for the different ensembles.
MUSIC SOCIETY
Hampton has a thriving Music Society run by parents to support the Music Department by helping at concerts, and providing financial help for special projects. The most recent of these projects is the ‘Rare Beasts’ scheme, which supports new boys at Hampton who wish to take up an instrument which is less common at School (for example, the Bassoon or the French Horn).
Music Tuition
Instrumental and vocal tuition is available to all members of the School, by application to the Director of Music, on any orchestral instrument, Piano, Organ, Modern Guitar, Drum Kit, Jazz Piano and Saxophone. There are currently 26 visiting music staff, all of whom have excellent reputations with many being prominent performers in their field. Timetables for musical tuition are posted in the main corridor and also on firefly. Theory and Aural lessons are also available.
Diary of Music Events
There are many performance opportunities at Hampton, and each term the School has a busy diary of events. The following are due to take place during the spring term:
All concerts are open to parents and friends of the School.
