Welcome to the First Year Blog!
Welcome back! After three weeks off, the final term of the year is now in full swing! The summer term brings new sports options (good luck to all cricketers involved in their first game in Hampton whites this weekend!), better weather (not long now until the fields will be open for play at break and lunch!) and exciting trips to Winchester, the ESFA final in Stoke and more! The deadline for Project Explore is also coming up, and has been extended to allow you to visit a local site during the upcoming bank holiday weekend – your projects now need to be submitted to Mr Hill and Mrs Peattie by Tuesday 2 May.
MEET YOUR TEACHERS
This week, Shishir V (1J) and Jai K (1J) interviewed their Biology teacher and Deputy Head Dr Hendry!
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I went to uni and absolutely loved it, but when I was doing my PhD, I taught undergrads and realised that teaching rather than research was what I wanted to do.
What inspired you to work here at Hampton?
I knew the School’s reputation from working locally and so when the Deputy Head position was advertised I had to seize the opportunity.
What is your favourite thing about working here in Hampton?
The people, everyone (pupils and staff) is kind and fun to be around.
What is your best experience in your time here at Hampton?
There are many, but going to the Iceland on the geography trip and being able to train Harris were the most recent.
What do you enjoy most about being Deputy Head?
The chance to lead all the learning and teaching that goes on in the School.
Why did you choose Biology as your subject?
It’s fascinating, you can’t ever finish learning about it.
If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?
A researcher at uni in biology.
What was your topic for your PhD on?
The influence of benthic hydrodynamics on the ecology of Hydropsyche siltalai.
What is your favourite hobby?
Walking, hill-walking and being out and about enjoying natural history.
What is your favourite flavour of ice cream?
I don’t like ice cream!
What is your favourite book?
I read all the time, but from childhood 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith
What is the best place you have ever visited?
The Galapagos islands, where Charles Darwin made some of the observations that led him to develop the theory of Natural Selection.
PROJECT EXPLORE
Don’t miss out on your chance to submit a piece of work for Project EXPLORE, the deadline is coming up very soon. The May bank holiday is the ideal time to visit a local site and produce a project on it. Should you need a reminder of what Project EXPLORE is all about, take a listen to Mr Hill and Mrs Peattie explain more:
Talk!
With the coronation of His Majesty The King just two weeks away, we’re delighted to welcome BBC Royal Correspondent Sarah Campbell in our first Talk! of the summer term. Come along to the Hammond Theatre on Tuesday 25 April at 1pm for what promises to be a fascinating event. Find out more here.
TUTEE OF THE WEEK
Every week, the First Year Tutor team nominate a boy who they have been particularly impressed with, and Mr Hill and Mrs Peattie provide him with a football to use on the fields for the week!
This week’s tutee of the week is Henry S (1J) as Mr Ferrier, Mr Townshend, Mr Hill and Mrs Peattie have been impressed with his cheerful and positive attitude to all things Hampton – well done, Henry!

We love to hear about what you have been getting up to outside of school and to celebrate your successes in the First Year Blog! Please do send any information about any of your achievements through to Mr Fuldner (d.fuldner@hamptonschool.org.uk).
