Welcome to the Third Year Blog!
Heads of Year Message
We have been very impressed with the way that all Third Years have adapted to the new remote learning environment at e-Hampton.
This week you have all demonstrated a remarkable commitment to achieving personal best in challenging and uncertain circumstances.
Please keep these efforts up as the term progresses and let us or your Form Tutors know if you are having difficulties.
A few reminders to ensure everyone is interpreting the Advice on Guided Home Learning document correctly:
- You shouldn’t be using mobile phones whilst in lessons or during the School day (as normal).
- Don’t alter your profile picture when using MS Teams.
- Please arrive for all registrations, form periods and lessons promptly on MS Teams when they are scheduled.
- You will need to “register” that you are ready to work on Firefly by 8:45am each morning and attend a morning registration on MS Teams with your Form Tutors at 8:45am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or a Form Period at 10:15am on Mondays and Thursdays.
We look forward to seeing your contributions to this weekly blog and hope it will be a useful outlet for your creativity, community spirit and competitive instincts during the period of remote learning.
Best wishes
Miss Smith & Mr Rigby
Third Year Special Mentions
3J have been studying the Holocaust this week. To go beyond the statistics of the Shoah and understand that each one of the six million victims was an individual human being. The boys have been researching stories of some of those who perished. Oscar T wrote nearly two thousand very powerful words – a brief extract of his research is below:
Janusz Korczak was the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit, Polish educator, children’s author and orphanage director. He was born in Warsaw in 1878 and died in the Treblinka extermination camp in 1942. When World War II broke out, Korczak volunteered for the army, having serving as a lieutenant in World War I. Korczak’s orphanage was moved to the Warsaw ghetto in 1940 and Korczak went with the children. In 1942, the Nazis took the 200 children to the Treblinka extermination camp. Korczak was offered sanctuary by the Polish underground organisation Zegota, but he refused. He went with the children to the camp where he was offered to be released again, but he refused. He was then gassed with the children.
Third Year Wellbeing
Here are some top tips for looking after your mental and physical wellbeing during the lockdown period:
- Stay active – get some exercise every day (see below for PE and Sports activities available).
- Complete your daily online lessons and tasks.
- Speak to your friends and family.
- Find time to read a book.
- Give yourself some space and time to reflect.
- Keep your room and workspace tidy and clean.

Here is a report from Oscar T (3J):
During some of my free time in lockdown, I took the opportunity to explore my passion for technology by taking an old phone apart. I found it really interesting to see how each of the components all came together and how easy it was to take them apart and put them back together. After separating the screen, battery, casing and circuitry, I also tried my hand at some photography, as you can see. The tools are really cheap and the task is a lot less daunting than you may think so I would definitely recommend that anyone with an interest in technology or electronics finds an old phone and give it a go!
PE & Sports
We would like to make all boys aware of the following, to help with their activity.
PE
Your PE task will be set at the beginning of the week on Firefly, to be handed in on Friday. The PE Department are also creating many other ways to help you stay active for at least an hour a day.
Please check the School’s social media, website and Firefly pages for updates.
Sports Afternoons
A number of staff are creating live sessions, webinars and pre-recorded material for you. This may mean you are invited to a number of meetings on your sports afternoon. The majority of these sessions are optional and are there for your benefit and interest.
Many of the sessions are open to all. For example, running technique in athletics and catching technique for cricket are excellent skills for you all to develop. It is absolutely fine to choose a session and change your mind if you do not wish to attend, or another session becomes available.
Firefly
Please all start to regularly check two areas of Firefly:
- Your year group page – route: Academic Departments – PE&Sport – School Exercise Plan – choose year group.
- Sport specific pages – route: Academic Departments – PE&Sport – choose sport.
If you are using your iPad, you will need to use the menu button each time. It is key that boys check these areas, as Firefly is our main channel and offers you all lots of activities, challenges and advice!
Guess the Workspace
One challenge that our teaching staff have been working on this week is Guess the Workspace. If you missed the first two challenges, take a look at the link below. Look closely at the clues and see if you can correctly identify which teachers work here?
Your School Needs You!
Did you know that Friday 8 May, VE Day, will be the 75th anniversary celebrations of the surrender of Nazi Germany. which ended the Second World War in Europe. We want you and your family to get involved! The History Department would like to put together a collection of stories from World War Two. Does your family have memories of the war that you are willing to share?
