Welcome to the Third Year Blog!
Happy National Biology week everyone! The Third Year boys have enjoyed a variety of Biological themed events over the past week- the highlight of the week being the Third Year “Come as a Different Species day” which took place on Wednesday. There were some fantastic and very creative costumes on show – thank you parents for your help with these!
Going with the theme of the week, we heard an engaging and informative talk from Miss Barnes in Monday’s assembly. Miss Barnes spoke about the issue of loss of global biodiversity but focused on celebrating some weird and wonderful creatures from across the planet. Mr Morris updated the school on the Emergency lockdown procedure and Mr Nicholson reminded the boys about “Toot toot”- an online service/App that the boys can use if they wish to raise a concern about a fellow peer. The Headmaster finished off the assembly by celebrating the sporting successes from the previous week.

Third Year Art Trip to Roche Court New Art Centre, Wiltshire
On Wednesday 9 October 2019, we visited Roche Court – a contemporary art and sculpture park. When we first arrived, we were met by a few amazing sculptures, one that I had drawn in school myself. We got off the bus and proceeded to walk to the meeting point where we would learn a few safety points and then meet with our group leaders for the day. We left the assembly point to meet Lynne, our group leader for the day, who first took us to the main area of the sculpture park where we could see a wide range of sculptures. It took a while to take in the broad range of stone, metal and wooden sculptures that were there on the day.
The first sculpture we were introduced to was the Tame Buzzard Line by Richard Long which at first seemed simple but when I was told the actual meaning I understood how complex the design was and how Long was more of a ‘walking artist’ in comparison to just a ordinary artist. We were taken round all the different sculptures and one that stood out to me was a lightning strike by David Armitage and it had two factors to it; firstly it looked like a lightning strike coming down and from another angle looked like a tree being split down the middle. Also the rustic metal look added to the sculpture as well and gave a depth which really held the thought of it being a tree being split down the middle, firmly in my head. After this we headed back to have lunch at the Assembly point.
After lunch we headed round the outskirts of the massive sculpture park looking at sculptures from a large hare, to a tree with bracket fungus growing on it, to a large UFO spaceship, where we took more pictures! Probably the most interesting part of the day was finding out about the inscriptions on one particular sculpture by Zak Ove, which I found very interesting and a lot of thought went into this sculpture with a design and the meaning of it.
The trip was fantastic and really pushed me to think how everything was made and were the idea came from. Lastly, I really would like to visit again and I think that the Third Years next year will find this trip amazing and very engaging.

Hampton U14As vs Alleyn’s
Having accumulated a number of good results in the previous weeks, the U14As were unlucky to be held to a 0-0 draw in the weekend’s block fixtures against Alleyn’s.
Fresh off the back of a winning streak, Hampton were looking to increase their run of success by coming up against one of the best teams in the country – Alleyn’s School in what was to be an extremely entertaining and dramatic affair. The 2019 ISFA Finalists got off to a good start with a series of intelligent pressing moves that proved effective in the early stages however as the game progressed Hampton’s stereotypically creative passing and moving took its toll on the game as the majority of the possession began to fall into the hands of the away side. However, despite this increased quality neither side scored before halftime. This was due to the brilliant shot stopping abilities of Conrad Knight and equally to some good last ditch defending from the opposition. The second half brought much of the same in the way of promising chances and exciting play as the various subs, who came on, inspired and influenced some more good moves. However, in the dying minutes of the game, Jamie Wilson received the ball, turned one defender before being brought down by the supporting player. Despite the reckless challenge from the sliding opponent, play resumed as the referee decided to let the decision go. Apart from a few more battles, this concluded the match and although there was a slight sense of disappointment in the air, overall, everyone was pleased with the result and equally proud of the committed performance.
After the game, Mr Bolton described how “It would have been nice to get a win but all in all, I can’t fault the boys’ effort. They strung some lovely bits of play together and deservedly earned a draw against a very strong Alleyn’s side” Although the contest was only a friendly, it certainly meant a lot in the way of the U14As getting yet another result under their belt for the upcoming vital cup and league games.
Third Year Inter Form Competition Update – The Wills’ Cup
Third Year Inter Form Dodgeball will take place on the final day of this half term (Friday 18 October) at 12:35pm in the Sports Hall. It will be a fancy dress occasion, with prizes awarded for best dressed on the day! Third Year boys should bring £2 to give to Form Tutors at AM registration, £1 for mufti and a further £1 for fancy dress, all to be donated to Form Charity. Boys are encouraged to change into their fancy dress outfits as quickly as possible at the start of lunch – matches will start at 12.45pm sharp!
Further details about dodgeball to follow. We need teams of 8 players (squads can be larger so teams can be changed between games, but all members of the squad should play a game at some point) so start pulling your troops together!
Have a great weekend!
