Welcome to the Third Year Blog!
Well done for getting through the first full week back of 2020! It’s back to business for our Third Years as lessons have resumed and co-curricular activities have restarted this week. On Monday, the boys continued their PSHE topic on Careers and completed the intriguing “Probe” test. On Thursday, the Third Years heard a talk from Sam Ellis OH (2000) on his career and the many different avenues he has explored over the years.

Third Year Special Mentions
Good luck to Rex B for his upcoming gymnastics events! Rex will be competing in the international gymnastics competition in Edinburgh and at a Worlds selection competition in Stoke.
Form Charity Elections
This year each form will choose a charity among themselves. These charities will then be taken to their Year Group Council meeting, whittled down to three, and then these will go on to the Form Charity Committee to decide on the shortlist and go forward to the election process.

String Concert Tuesday 21 January
You are warmly invited to come and hear the String Concert next Tuesday 21 January at 7pm in the Hammond Theatre. It will be a very varied programme from Bach and Beethoven to Tico-Tico and Keane. Some of the best string players in School will be performing and would love a supportive audience to play to! There will also be a short performance by some of the instrumental teachers. It should be finished by 9pm at the latest.

Rock Concert 2020
The auditions are over, the set list has been finalised… and I am delighted to announce that tickets have gone on general sale for the ever popular Rock Concert 2020!

Rock on!
The Wizard of OZ!
The Wizard of Oz, a joint production with Waldegrave School, is being performed at the Hammond Theatre in a few weeks time. There are three evening performances beginning at 7.30pm on 11, 12 and 13 February.
There are over 60 boys involved in the show! The cast is from the First to Fourth Year pupils and the band and crew are from a range of years.

Model United Nations Guildford High School 2020
On Saturday 11 January, a group of boys travelled early in the morning to Guildford High School to participate in GHS MUN 2020. Hampton were representing DPRK (North Korea) and China. After a short opening ceremony, we split up into our committees to start debating resolutions. I was in the SPECPOL committee, where we were debating ‘The question of reparations for colonisation’ and ‘The question of the involvement of the judicial system in the political process’. The debating was exciting (yet heated), with lots of thought-provoking arguments. However, an unlikely allied team of United Kingdom, USA and Switzerland thought that colonisation on poor countries ‘wasn’t that bad’ – not surprisingly, angering many other delegates!
After some well-deserved lunch, we were told about the ‘crisis debate’, which was that Yellowstone Volcano had just erupted and we had to help citizens evacuate. We then created a resolution about this and debated it, with lots of valid points made, including the national prevention of driving – in order to not swirl up dangerous ash. Towards the end of the day, serious debate made way for some witty comments – a highlight being the order that everybody must have Vladimir Putin calendars! Next was General Assembly, where all committees and countries came together to debate ‘the question of substance abuse’. Finally, there was the closing ceremony, where the awards were given out. Hampton was very successful, winning many individual awards; I was pleased to get the ‘Highly commended delegate’ prize for my committee. Overall the day was a success, and there were some very happy, but tired faces on the journey back. Many thanks goes to Miss Field and Mr Agulian for making this trip possible.

U14 Sport
Golf
Golf practice nets runs on Tuesday lunchtimes. All welcome including beginners, and no kit required. Meet Mrs May by the cycle racks at the front of School at 12.40pm.
Football
Despite a late downpour, the Hampton U14A team saw off Trinity School in the fifth round of the ESFA Cup after a hat trick from Chibby N, who helped to seal a 3-2 victory.
After a long journey and various delays, the game eventually kicked off to a large supporting fan base and heavy rain. The uneven pitch certainly played a part as both the ball and various players found themselves sliding around in the opening minutes, leaving it difficult for any side to control the ball or the play that followed.
However, due to the important circumstances, play started to pick up, as soon enough Chibby skipped past a few players before excellently driving the ball across the face of the goal and into the bottom right corner to break the deadlock.
More exciting played followed as three players went on to hit the woodwork in the following minutes, prior to the follow up goal as once again Chibby found himself on the edge of the six-yard box after a great run down the wing from Hayden C, opened his body up and slotted the ball into the net.
By the time the second half came along, more contests were taking place all over the pitch and a very tight game was developing. However, yet again to ease the tension, Chibby popped up with a goal to get a hat trick and further increase the lead for the away side.
In spite of this lead and more relaxing situation for the U14As, the closing minutes played host to two unexpected goals from Trinity to almost manufacture a comeback from an otherwise Hampton dominated game.
Although a late blip put doubt in the mind of the players and fans alike, the boys showcased a very reassuring performance, readying them for the sixth round of ESFA and upcoming matches in the Surrey Cup.
