Welcome to the Third Year Blog!
Unlike the controversial European Super League, which crumbled to the ground faster than a cheap biscuit in a hot mug of tea this week, the durability and enthusiasm of the Third Year boys remains as strong as ever as we end the first full week of the summer term!
Monday’s virtual assembly contained some excellent ideas on Hampton Extended Learning Projects (HELP) from senior pupils, Maxi and Matthew, and Mr Nicholson delivered a thoughtful eulogy on the Duke of Edinburgh and his long life in public service.
Lots to report on this week – read on to find out what the boys have been up to!
Heads of Year Message
We hope everyone is enjoying the start of the summer term. With sports fixtures against other schools back up and running, it feels like another big step back towards normality has been taken, and the boys are relishing it. Particular mention goes to the U14 cricketers who played Harrow (always tough opposition) this week. The U14A team came up just 20 runs short in their attempt to chase down a total of 200, whilst the U14B and U14C teams registered impressive victories. Well done to all those who played in the fixture.
LFD testing
All boys should bring home a new box of LFD testing kits by the end of this week. Boys should continue with the programme of self-administered LFD testing at regular intervals (twice a week) at home. Please follow the guidelines sent via SchoolPost from Mr Woods on Thursday 11 March, titled “Lateral Flow Device – arrangements for home testing”.
Third Year Progress Assessments
Third Year Progress Assessments will take place during the week commencing Monday 24 May (the week before half term). All boys will benefit from a “Study Skills” session during Form Period on Monday. The session will help boys to plan their revision schedule, consider different learning styles and review some top tips for revising. We have asked all Third Year subject teachers to stop setting homework (or to set targeted revision homework tasks only) from Friday 30 April. Boys should use the homework time available to prepare diligently for the Progress Assessments.
Co-curricular activities
Boys should continue to listen for Form Tutors announcements, check their emails and the digital screens around School for information about co-curricular activities. Many are now back up and running in Year Group bubbles – see co-curricular timetable below.

Earth Day 2021
Thursday 22 April was Earth Day 2021, with this year’s theme being “restore the earth”. Understandably, the concept of sustainability and the environment is a popular topic of conversation amongst the Third Year boys, and the Geography department have set you all a reflective exercise to mull over in a spare moment over the weekend:
What do you do, and what could you do, to reduce your environmental impact on the earth?
Here at the Third Year blog, we’d love to hear your thoughts on this, and so please do send over any reflections to j.neville@hamptonschool.org.uk and we will be sure to include these in next week’s blog.
You can see the full live stream of events that happened on Earth Day 2021, and the world leaders’ summit on climate, here:
Science Fair!
Calling all budding scientists! Pupils in the Third Year are invited to participate in the annual Lower School Science Fair. This is an opportunity for you to extend your interest in science through a project of your choice. Examples of past projects include: creating a small-scale water cycle in a bottle, researching the perfect free-throw in basketball, the feasibility of flying cars, and the use of brain waves to control LEDs. You may work on your own or in a small group. On the day of the fair, you or your group will have to give a short 3–5 minute presentation about your findings, ideally with a demonstration. The Science Fair will take place as follows:
Date: 13 May 2021
Time: 12:35 – 1:50pm
Location: Hammond Theatre
If you’d like to take part, please collect an entry form from outside the Physics Office and give it to Mr Cook by Wednesday 5 May. If you have any questions, please see Mr Cook in the Physics Office, or speak to your subject teacher in the subject that your project seems to fit most closely within. Entry forms can also be downloaded here.
So, get your thinking caps on!
Delicious Dessert Tasting!
Some lucky Third Year boys got the opportunity to test out a selection of new desserts made by one of our top chefs, Farhan, on Thursday! If there’s one sure-fire way to enthuse the boys it’s to serve them up some tasty food, and Farhan provided a smorgasbord of items ranging from orange and polenta cake, to a fantastic jam sponge, and even some fruity apple muffins. The clear winner though, was the scrumptious banana bread – yum!!
We hope you left room for lunch boys!
U14 Cricket
The U14A cricket team got their season off to a fantastic start last weekend with a remarkable victory over a Surrey Schools team containing some talented players from across the borough. Natty T reports below on a great win for the boys:
Last Saturday we all turned up to begin the first game of the season with high spirits as we watched the Under 13s win their game in the last over. Our batting and bowling had been strong whilst in the nets and we were confident that a good batting performance would secure a strong position for the rest of the game. Anuj S began the game with a powerful pull shot to get us underway. The top four batsman all scored runs as the top order fired to give the big hitters in the middle order a strong base to score quick runs off. With Zidaan K and William W displaying power and skill to raise our run rate, with the latter hitting two massive sixes over the trees. Our innings ending on 228 off 30 overs.
Our day in the field began with an opposition player hitting a blistering 30 runs in rapid time, but after his swift retirement we wrestled back control of the match, with Olly S and Zidaan K as the pick of the bowlers during the middle overs. Anuj S took a hard catch going backwards to pick off an opposition opener. A series of chaotic run outs and superb fielding from the Hampton side caused the opposition middle order to be somewhat subdued. Some brilliant death bowling from Olly H and Olly G caused them to fall short of our total by 36 runs.
Well played Surrey Schools, and good luck for the rest of the season, and well played boys for the first win.
A tough match followed for the U14As on Thursday against Harrow, and they were unfortunate to come away with a narrow loss by 20 runs in a hard-fought contest, with Maddox D top scoring for the Hampton side. The U14 B and C sides were both victorious against Harrow, with superb innings from both Will W and Ollie G for the Bs, and four wickets for Leo C in the U14C game after some great scoring from Keshan K.
Senior School Musical
Calling all budding thespians!
The Drama department is delighted to announce that the next School Musical with LEH will be Guys and Dolls! This will be hosted by Hampton in October 2021 and we are looking to cast the production and get started with rehearsals before the summer holidays.
Third Year auditions will take place on Tuesday 18 May 4-5.45pm in Drama Hall. If you are interested in auditioning, please download the audition pack from the Drama page on Firefly.
The Joint School Musicals are always a lot of fun and and a highlight of the school year! Previous musicals have included West Side Story, Anything Goes and Crazy for You.
So, if you fancy treading the boards of the Hammond Theatre, come along to the auditions!
