Welcome to the Third Year Blog!
The final week of a balmy April has drawn to a close with a return to the more usual showers associated with this time of the year. However, nothing can dampen the spirits of our impressive Third Years and they have taken the bull by the horns so far in the first few weeks of summer term!
It hasn’t escaped anyone’s notice that there are upcoming progress assessments on the horizon, scheduled for the final week of this half term, and so Monday’s Form Tutor period was spent discussing study skills and how best to revise. The boys really did appreciate the tips and advice from their Form Tutors, and I am sure that they will put these into practice in the coming weeks.
Heads of Year Message
We hope everyone enjoys the Bank Holiday weekend. Just three updates/reminders from us this week:
HPV vaccination consent letters
All boys should bring home an HPV vaccination consent letter over the weekend. Please can we ask that parents complete the consent form and ask your son to return it to his Form Tutor next week.
LFD testing
Boys should continue with the programme of self-administered LFD testing at regular intervals (twice a week) at home. Please follow the guidelines sent via SchoolPost from Mr Woods on Thursday 11 March, titled “Lateral Flow Device – arrangements for home testing”.
Third Year Progress Assessments
Third Year Progress Assessments will take place during the week commencing Monday 24 May (the week before half term). The boys benefited from a Study Skills session led by their Form Tutors on Monday. Following this, we sent parents the resources used in that session, along with some additional guidance on supporting your son’s revision at home. By now, the boys should have created their own revision schedule. Third Year subject teachers have been asked to stop setting homework (other than revision tasks) after today, so boys should use the homework time available to prepare diligently for the Progress Assessments from this weekend.
Boys – enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend. We look forward to seeing you on top form next week after a well-deserved extra day of rest. As always, let us, your Form Tutors or the relevant subject teachers know if you are having any difficulties.
Best wishes
Miss Smith & Mr Rigby
Philosophy Circle
Calling all philosophers, ethicists, budding thinkers and deep consider-ers…. Third Year Philosophy Circle is back! After a hiatus, it’s better than ever, with more questions than an over-excited reporter! Mr. Scott invites all who are interested to come along and dive into the vast ocean of philosophical thought, you don’t even need to know how to swim! See you all on Thursdays at 1.15pm in Room 20!
Science Fair
Calling all budding scientists! Pupils in the Third Year are invited to participate in the annual Lower School Science Fair. This is an opportunity for you to extend your interest in science through a project of your choice. Examples of past projects include: creating a small-scale water cycle in a bottle, researching the perfect free-throw in basketball, the feasibility of flying cars, and the use of brain waves to control LEDs. You may work on your own or in a small group. On the day of the fair, you or your group will have to give a short 3–5 minute presentation about your findings, ideally with a demonstration. The Science Fair will take place as follows:
Date: 13 May 2021
Time: 12:35 – 1:50pm
Location: Hammond Theatre
If you’d like to take part, please collect an entry form from outside the Physics Office and give it to Mr Cook by Wednesday 5 May. If you have any questions, please see Mr Cook in the Physics Office, or speak to your subject teacher in the subject that your project seems to fit most closely within. Entry forms can also be downloaded here.
So, get your thinking caps on over the bank holiday weekend!
Creative Writing Awards 2021
Many congratulations to Thomas M in 3J who has received a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Intermediate Creative Writing Awards 2021, judged by young adult fiction author Sara Grant who has also provided annotated feedback to all of the finalists.
Sara was very impressed with the overall quality of the action adventure stories, and this is what she said about them:
Surreal tales that played with reality. Twists I never saw coming. Terrifying surprises. And unique fantastical worlds coming to life in just 1,000 words. The writers at Hampton School wowed me! It was very difficult to select the winners, as the standard of storytelling was incredibly high. All of these talented boys deserve praise and I have no doubt that if they keep going, one day I’ll be buying books with their names on the spine.
Take a listen to a short extract from Thomas’ fantastic story The Chase:
Thomas wins some book vouchers and will have his story published in this year’s edition of Lion Print. Well done, Thomas, and all of this year’s finalists!
May the 4th Be with You
As we celebrate Star Wars Day on Tuesday May 4th, look out for the tasty galactic treats that will be on offer in the Dining Hall:
May the fork be with you!
U14 Cricket
A tough match for the U14A team took place last weekend against Merchant Taylors, with Hampton losing out by 6 wickets. The U14D team claimed an excellent victory in their fixture though, with Fahad H taking 2 wickets.
U14 Tennis
Mr McTernan reports on the U14 Tennis fixture vs. St Paul’s on Thursday.
The U14s were unfortunate to lose to St Paul’s in their first match of the season. With single-point deuces, many games did not go our way but all matches were well contested with some great rallies on show. Lawrie W, Tim W, Oscar S, Tom K, Porter R and Liam B-G all played well in what was their first school fixture since First Year, and know that more matchplay scenarios in training and developing chemistry with their doubles partners will see them come back stronger in their next fixture against Harrodian next week.
Senior School Musical
Calling all budding thespians!
The Drama department is delighted to announce that the next School Musical with LEH will be Guys and Dolls! This will be hosted by Hampton in October 2021 and we are looking to cast the production and get started with rehearsals before the summer holidays.
Third Year auditions will take place on Tuesday 18 May 4-5.45pm in Drama Hall. If you are interested in auditioning, please download the audition pack from the Drama page on Firefly.
Calling alL LEGO Enthusiasts
Mrs Moore in our Art Department is setting up a new lunchtime LEGO Club which will start in September 2021 and she is appealing for donations of LEGO bricks, boards, pieces or mini-figures. So, check your cupboards, under your beds, on top of your shelves for anything that has been forgotten about and the Art Department will happily give it a new lease of life at LEGO Club.
Question of the week!
It’s been brilliant to see all the entries flood in for QotW recently – keep them coming, chaps! Last week’s maths questions got you thinking, and well done to Tristan T, Avinash G, Hugo K, Ishan P, Flynn H, Edmund N, Sohan B, Anuj S, Will W and Isaac T who all correctly answered that there are 21 prime numbers between 10 and 100! Don’t forget to collect your merits from your Form Tutors, boys!
Have a great bank holiday weekend!
