U13A ESFA Cup Football Match

Last Thursday, the under 13A football team clashed with ACS Cobham in a brilliant, six goal thriller. The first half was tense with both sides playing tough and aggressive football with mistakes and fouls conceded by both teams. It was a challenge for both sides but by the end of the first half the score was 1-0 to Hampton, a free kick the only goal on the sheet. The second half began well, with two goals in quick succession, including a penalty for us, making it 3-0 before a free kick from Cobham slotted into the top corner of our net. 3-1.  We seemed to be on top as the game started to draw to a close, and we proved that with a tap in, in the bottom corner. In the final minutes of the match the opposition got a 1-on-1 and scored. The match ended 4-2 and relief flowed through our veins.

Pens Down Day

Pens Down Day happens twice a year and is a fantastic opportunity for you to explore your subject in a practical or creative way. I always love to hear about what you get up to in these lessons and we’ve got a few pupil’s who are sharing their favourite Pens Down Day lesson below:

Music

We started our day with an exciting musical Pens Down Day lesson. We have been learning about musical theatre and opera and this lesson put that knowledge to the test…

We were separated into two groups and we each had to argue about the statement that musical theatre is the same as opera. We were put into the group that argued that opera is NOT the same as musical theatre. The debate was heated but the opposition had many flaws in their argument. In the final closing statements, the opposition accidentally heavily implied that opera is not the same… Destroying their argument. In the final seconds the opposition admitted that they were not the same. It was a music lesson that became a debating-music hybrid. We would like to do it again.

Maths

In Second Year Maths Extension, we did a variation of fun puzzles that helped with problem solving skills. We did these in groups of 2/3, which definitely made it way more fun! Each problem always had two ways of solving it – either finding a strategy, or trial and error. As a result, we always had to have a combination of luck and skill on our side, and this made it even more competitive.

At the end, it was a competition between every team, since most teams had completed every problem but one. This last question remained unsolved, and has not yet been solved …

Can you solve it?

Question: Put two straight lines across a cross to split it into 4 shapes. These 4 shapes must form a square.

Good luck!

Musical auditions

Joseph and His Amazing Technicoloured Dream Coat

It was great to hear that so many of you tried out for this year’s exciting Junior Musical. Let’s find out more:

We arrived at the Hammond Theatre at 4pm after School on Tuesday, having familiarised ourselves with the song Close Every Door to Me. All 70 of us were told to go in a line and received a number based off our year group, all feeling slightly nervous but very excited. Next, we continued to learn Close Every Door to Me, trying to focus on our face expressions and dynamics. Then we went into smaller groups and were observed by the teachers. After finishing the song, which took about 35 minutes, we moved onto a dance rehearsal. It wasn’t too hard, as the moves weren’t too complicated, but still took a while to master. There will be a recall next Tuesday, and then they will decide which people will make it into the musical. Even though there will only be about 20 Hamptonians who make it to the actual musical, I still really enjoyed the experience, even if I don’t make it in.

Firstly, we sat down in a room full of budding actors all waiting daringly for the judges (teachers!) to arrive. When they arrived we warmed up our voices and then we began singing, we sung the audition song Close Every Door to me and the judges inspected closely as we performed. Heart racing, we sung to the best of our ability and then we sat down, waiting, as the judges discussed their verdict. After this we did a dance audition and as the tension built we watched intensely as we memorised the dance routine in hopes of proceeding to the recall stage. Overall it was really fun and I am hoping we made it to the recall stage.

Meet Miss Tiller

This week I had the pleasure of being interviewed by some of the lovely tutees in 2L, Kai L and Danny P. There were some… interesting questions!

What is your favourite memory of a class?

My favourite memory was probably during my Advent Challenge with my tutor group last year, a group of the pupils created a dance routine to Frozen. It was fantastic.

What is your favourite movie?

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Favourite book?

Harry Potter

What do you enjoy about the subject you teach?

I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember – I used to register my toys before school in the morning. I also adore Drama and the theatre and wanted to share my love of that with others.

What would you do if you were not a teacher

Photographer – I used to do wedding photography!

What controversial food do you really enjoy?

Ready salted crisps with salad cream – try it!

What is your party trick?

I can cross one eye at a time.

Are there more wheels or doors in the world?

I’ve thought about this a lot. Doors.

Best pasta sauce?

Tomato and basil sauce

Favourite season of Simpson and why?

Season 7 because it’s not too new that it’s lost it edge, but not too old that things look odd and blurry.

Favourite Shakespeare play?

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

If you could speak any language, what would it be?

Spanish!

CLUBS OF THE WEEK

There are lots of clubs to choose from at lunchtime, here are just two of the actvities that Second Years have had a go at this week:

Book Club

Book Club is an exciting club that takes place every Thursday during the second half of lunch in the Library. In it, we discuss a book we were given the week or two before. You can be any reading speed as you have an entire week or two to read. Lunch is provided but any allergies or dietary requirements should be discussed with Mr Hemsley, the librarian. The books are always entertaining and they provide some interesting discussion points. The current book is Everyone Dies Famous In A Small Town.

Rugby

Rugby at Hampton has many elements on and off the pitch. You have the inspiring talks by your coach and the buzz of the changing room after a close win. The feeling of putting in your gum shield to smashing into the opposition to later have meals with them. When you read the team sheet and notice all the friends you made from a ruthless sport. The cheer by your team and all watching as you sail over the line. This is just a glimpse of the Hampton rugby life.

The full list of all clubs, societies and other co-curricular activities on offer at Hampton can be found here:

CO-CURRICULAR TIMETABLE 2022-3

Why not try a new club next week, plenty of time to get stuck in before half term.

SPECIAL SHOUTOUTS

Guradaes P (2H) was awarded the U12 Best Batsman Award at Ashford Cricket Club. An amazing achievement, Guradaes, well done!

We love to hear about what you have been getting up to outside of school and to celebrate your successes in the Second Year Blog! Please do send any information about any of your achievements through to Miss Tiller. B.Tiller@hamptonschool.org.uk
