Welcome to the Third Year Blog!
On Monday this week the Third Years heard talks on their GCSE Options and the HELP Project. We strongly encourage the Third Years boys to consider doing a HELP Project this year and would welcome their ideas. During PSHE on Thursday we continued working through the Oracy topic – exploring ways to develop communication skills and how to deliver a “sound bite”.
Here are some other highlights from the week:

String Concert 21st January 2020
We are holding this year’s String Concert in the Hammond Theatre on Tuesday 21 January 2020 at 7pm. The concert can include performances from any string instrument players except electric guitars. Please think about any solos that you would like to perform but, in the event that there are too many pieces offered, priority will be given to senior players and ensembles. If you can get together with someone else to play a duet that would be great. Please keep pieces to a maximum of four minutes and only one piece per person.
Please speak to your teacher and let me know your pieces/groups by Friday 13 December 2019. We will need any piano accompaniments as soon as possible and if we do not receive them in good time and preferably by the end of this term, you will not be able to play.
Please send me an email if you would like to play, or sign up on the board in the Garrick.
If you don’t want to perform this time, please do come along to the concert and support the other string players, it should be a really good evening .
If you have any questions please contact me E.vanments@hamptonschool.org.uk
ISSP Model United Nations afternoon
LEH are hosting their annual ISSP Model United Nations afternoon (12-4pm) on Thursday 28 November. This event is available to Third Year pupils who have never done MUN before!
If you are interested in taking part, and you think you would be suitable please email/see Miss Field in the Politics and Psychology office.
Here’s some more information about the day:
The purpose of this MUN day is to introduce pupils to the various arts of researching topical issues, enabling them to learn ways to articulate their ideas effectively and to become more familiar with debating skills. It is also a fantastic way for pupils to build their confidence in public speaking in a safe and encouraging environment. Delegates will be paired up with a partner from a different school to represent a particular country.
This activity does not require any preparation prior to the event as all participants will be given an information pack on the day and will have time to research their topic and country in pairs before the debating starts.
U14 Sports Reports
Lots of sports reports this week, thanks to all contributors and keep sending in your match reports.
Football
Josh H reports on the U14A match against Wilson’s School:
Fortune seemed to be on the side of the Hampton U14As this week as they narrowly saw off a quick and physical Wilson’s side by 2 goals to 1. In the opening spells of the game, both sides showed no signs of complete domination or possession and except for a few good saves at both ends of the pitch, the play was quite central in its competitiveness and contention. However, soon enough, this style was ended by the visiting team in a goal which involved a skilful dribble followed by a composed finish under the keeper to give the opposition the lead. After this opening goal, much of the same followed and in spite of a slight shift in momentum in the favour of Hampton, the run up to half time was repetitively well fought.
After the break, with a new set of instructions at half time, the U14As were back only this time with a much more certain and composed approach that involved several chances. They were eventually rewarded with goal that was well executed by Hayden C having been deflected by a scrambling defender. With the equaliser under their belt, Hampton once again showed no signs of turning back as a surging Zain S stormed into the opposition box before producing an equally excellent shot, past the keeper and into the back of the net.
With one foot over the line and edging into the home straight, the home side did well to keep the defence solid for the remainder of the game which involved a few great saves from Conrad K. Eventually, the final whistle blew to conclude the match. Although it was a friendly, the meaning of it was far from that, as a lot was learned to help preparation for upcoming games in important competitions.
Josh also tells us all about the U14A match against Lancing College:
Despite the Hampton U14As dominance of the match, they were seemingly fortunate to win an action-packed 1-0 meeting with Lancing College on Saturday. Having set the game off on a good note, including a series of successful passages of play well strung together, Hampton looked on track for another comfortable, but well-fought, victory as a continuation of the previous Thursday. Sure enough, the goal came, sourcing from a neat, well-executed finish from a central area by a composed Hayden C. After the goal, more opportunities came the way of the home team including a penalty that was unluckily missed and a variety of efforts that weren’t quite converted including last ditch tackles and impressive saves from the opposition. However, as the closing stages approached, Hampton’s lead began to be challenged as Lancing College pushed on for an equaliser. Apart from a slightly panicked last two minutes, this change in momentum led to little in the way of clear cut chances. Eventually, the final whistle blew to end the game that was full of uncertainty yet had little to show for it in the way of goals. Overall, it was a good performance and although the U14As lacked a sense of ruthlessness, they did well to get the result and improve their winning rate further.
It’s not just the U14A footballers who’ve been busy on the football pitch, as Max I reports on the U14C team:
The team made their way over very wet ground to find out they were playing 9-a-side on a reduced size pitch; an interesting turn of events. Nevertheless, the lads set up for the game and began the match with great enthusiasm. The boys played relentlessly and scored a goal, which came from a Ben R header off a corner. The half came to a close and the score remained 1-0. Early into the second half, Hampton earned themselves a free kick which Monty R smashed into the back of the net. Another quarter passed with many great plays from Hampton. Ten minutes before the final whistle, Monty got the ball up front, set it up perfectly and scored another great goal bringing the final score to 3-0. All in all, quite a rough match and the boys deserved this win. Man of the match goes to Monty for his two great goals.
And finally, Ben A tells us about the U14D versus Lancing College:
On Saturday the U14D team played a match against Lancing College C’s, the final score was a 9-1 win to Hampton and the match was played on the Old Boys’ pitch. After kick-off, Hampton had a strong start and took an early lead, Hampton carried on pushing and scored five in the first half with Findlay B’s first of the season, Daniel S taking his record to four and Harry T finding the net twice with one being a great header. The second half came and Hampton were pushing for more, but being kept at bay by the opponents’ defence. Eventually Hampton broke through with Joe E nutmegging the keeper, Matthew B becoming the team’s top goal scorer with a well-placed shot and two from Ben A after a stunning pass from Matthew. However we couldn’t keep a clean sheet and we were caught on the counter-attack, for Lancing College to find a consolation goal. It was a great performance from the whole team especially as we were without any subs and had a change in defence at the last minute. Hopefully we can take this forward and repeat it in future games.
