WELCOME TO THE SECOND YEAR BLOG!
Whilst the election campaign bubbles away, Second Years are absorbed in their own feverish contest to be named Interform Champions, as well as organising sweepstakes for the Euros. We had the first round of the Interform Quiz this week and Maths fans enjoyed (?) two lengthy national competitions in the Sports Hall on Tuesday. Much of the break time chat was about football and the Euros begin tonight with Germany playing Scotland and hopes are pinned on England beating Serbia in Sunday’s match.
School Council and the SNRG (catering) Council met on Thursday with Miss Holt to propose improvements to the School and particularly on how we impact the environment. Regarding catering, I know there was a plea for more chips from 2W! Next week all of Second Year are out on the RS trip (details below) so remember to wear mufti on Thursday and bring things other than phones to entertain yourself on the coach trip to Richmond and back.

Interform Quiz
The first round of the quiz was this this week with a team from 2W pitted against 2L; 2W won with 200 points (70 point lead). The questions varied from: ‘What is the capital of Finland?’ to ‘Who was the Half Blood Prince in Harry Potter?’ (answers: Helsinki and Severus Snape).
2H played against 2B and with 2B coming out on top. Full report by Dennis H (2B):
The format of the quiz is very similar to University Challenge, there are starter questions worth 10 points each that anyone can buzz in for and you cannot discuss the answer with your teammates. If you get a starter question correct you receive three bonus questions which only your team are allowed to answer and you can discuss with your teammates, each bonus question is also worth 10 points.
In the first game that 2B played, I played against 2H’s team on Tuesday. There were lots of questions about various topics, questions included: which US president had the initials LBJ? (answer: Lyndon B Johnson), and which city is the only city to host the Olympic games three times? (answer: London). 2B won 240-90, however at the start it was close with both teams being on 90 points, but 2B managed to push ahead and win.
The second game played by 2B was against 2L in which 2B won 290-10. The question that 2L got correct was finish the phrase; don’t count your chickens before (blank). (Answer: don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched). Which was a bonus question that 2B answered incorrectly and was turned over to the other team. I enjoyed playing in the quiz and I helped my team answer many questions.

Junior Maths Kangaroo

This week we had the Junior Kangaroo, which is a follow-up round to the Junior Maths Challenge. The exam lasted an hour and was held in the sports hall. The hall was filled with tension as we waited for our paper with dread. I flew through the first questions but got stuck on the last ones. Time was running out and I needed to guess or answer. I guessed! Now I can only pray for a good result as a reward for my hard work.
Junior Maths Challenge

Other boys were involved in the two-hour national competition called the Junior Maths Olympiad. Section A was 10 one-mark questions and Section B was six questions which are 10 marks each and require full, written solutions. About ten Second Years took part in the Sports Hall on Tuesday; we will get our results next month and we are all hoping for a medal. I found it challenging but not impossible!
Cricket Update

Hampton School Vs Ibstock Place School
On Monday 10 June, Hampton’s Second Year B and C cricket teams played Ibstock Place School in a thrilling competition. It was a fine display of skill and performance from both sides, with the C’s winning their game by 125 runs and the B’s losing their game, despite their efforts. The game lasted for around 2 & a half hours or more, with a tea break in the middle. The C team made 165 runs and the Ibstock Cs made 45. It was a fairly easy victory for Hampton, with there being a wicket almost every over. Despite that, it made for a good game with both teams having enjoyed it. The B’s unfortunately lost their match by a significant margin, and even lost four wickets in an over at one point. We hope to have a rematch against Ibstock soon so that both our Bs and Cs win their games, but despite the loss it was an enjoyable evening of cricket.
School Council Update
Miss Holt gives us an update from the latest School Council and SNRG meeting this week. Thank you to the reps who came along to the Second Year Council meeting; the committee presented their ideas and have voted for the following:

Basketball and/or badminton as summer sport options.
More flexibility on the 3G rota – if a year group is absent or not using the 3G, teachers could allow others to play in their area.

35 years and still going! Calling all runners, beginners or seasoned athletes – be part of Hampton School running history by taking part in the 1.8 mile time trial loop. Meet outside the Sports Hall on Friday 12.40pm, ready to run. A range of certificates for completion.
