What a great week it has been here at Hampton partly due to the amazing weather we have had! The Third Years have been kept very busy with exam preparation and Inter-Form Athletics team organisation taking up a lot of Form time. On Monday during our Period 3 PSHE session the Third Years received a “Study Skills” talk from Mr Talman and Ms Conway in the Lecture Theatre. The boys put into practice some new active revision techniques and explored other revision methods. During our Form time on Thursday, the Third Years continued to research which revision techniques suited them best and started to analyse what type of learning style they enjoyed the most.

Hampton 14As First Four Games of the season:

Hampton 14As season began at Harrow. Harrow posted a superb total of 205-2 with most of the bowlers struggling. Hampton then started well but lost 4 wickets in quick succession. Then a partnership from Leanesh and Will brought them up to around 120 when Will finally hit one up to Mid On. Leanesh finished on 44*.

The second game was at home and was against Eton. Hampton batted first and with Leanesh posting another great score of 47*, Hampton finished on 148-6. After ten overs of the Eton innings it wasn’t looking good for Hampton as they were on 50-0. However, after 12 overs from the two left arm off spinners the score was 80-1 off 22. Ollie L then produced a bowling masterclass and took 6-13 as Hampton bowled Harrow out for 112.

The third game for the 14As was against Tiffin. Tiffin won the toss and chose to bat.  After two superb spells from Ali Jennings and Zack Gellatley who were both beating the bat at least four times per over Hampton got the two most important batsman out. Then Knowles and Joy Page came on and dominated the batsman. Theo Joy Page, after a poor first over regained a consistent line. Knowles fished with 3-4 of six overs.  Lycett and Dodhia then bowled well as Tiffin finished on 87 All Out. Hampton started well and lost Moffat relatively early, however Tetsuro and Kyan brought Hampton comfortably home. Kyan with 34* and Tetsuro with 30*. The result was a win by eight wickets.

The fourth game that Hampton played was against Dulwich. Hampton won the toss and elected to bat first. However, this seemed a poor decision at the half way stage with Hampton struggling to 85 All Out. Zach was the top scorer with 29. After some hairdryer treatment from the coach and a quiet tea, Hampton walked onto the field knowing that they had to bowl amazingly if they wanted to win this. After two very good opening spells each bowler taking one wicket, the two opening bowlers came off. Jennings being replaced by Knowles and Zach being replaced by Harley, on his debut for the A team. Harley, after a misplaced first over, found his line and length and dismissed their best batsman. Knowles finished his six overs with figures of 4-3. Harley was then replaced by Ollie who bowled a very consistent line and length. One beautiful ball bounced out side of the off stump and spun in between the bat and pad and just over the middle stump cutting the batsman in two. Chand replaced Knowles at the other end but he was unable to bowl more than one over as his back was giving him some problems. Tetsuro replaced Chand and between Ollie and Tetsuro they took the final couple of wickets and bowled out Dulwich for 60. A superb bowling performance which will give the team a lot of confidence going into next weekend’s game which is away at Reeds School.

This was the first game of the Cricket season as the U14B’s travelled away to Harrow in what ended up being a tight fought match, Harrow coming out victorious by only one wicket after a decent bowling performance. Some great batting displays where put on here with an amazing 53 from Tom Cowin. We were looking forward to the next game.

The second game was Eton, where on the whole we played well but made a number of simple fielding mistakes and dropped a couple catches. However, we made the game tight with some good bowling from Gopal Bhachu and Ollie Rochard. But, it wasn’t enough in the end and Eton ended up winning with five wickets in hands.

The third game was against tiffin and was the first victory of the season, winning the toss and choosing to bat. This worked in our favour after some great batting performances were put out by Adam Humpish who got 65 and a 50 from Nishaan Sornalingam. Also, Daniel Edge bowled well and got three wickets for only 13 runs in three overs.

The fourth game of the season was against Dulwich and again we came out victorious, winning the toss and choosing to bowl. We started well with Tom Cowin taking three wickets then I came and also took three wickets putting a lot of pressure onto their tail end. Then we put out a good batting performance with 38 from Tom Cowin and 36 from Adam Humpish. This was a good game for all the team and we are looking to continue this momentum.

U14 Rugby

The tenth International “Gonder” Youth Rugby Festival was held this past weekend in Frankfurt, Germany.

I participated as part of the London Irish U14 A team and the London Irish Middlesex Youth Academy. For two days, teams from 22 different countries competed in four age categories.

It was a competitive festival of high standard. Frankfurt, the host team, are well known as German rugby youth champions. Before the festival commenced, I was lucky enough to spend a few hours in Frankfurt city centre with two London Irish friends and my younger brother.  We climbed the 328 steps to the Dom (cathedral) tower [great views] and spent time in the historic and stunning central (Romer) square.  We ate the local wurst (sausages), tried the local ice cream and practised our (very limited) German.

The rugby was great.  We won all our games first day of the tournament and finished fourth overall.

Here’s a few photos – that’s me, number 11 and a red scrum cap.  Team photo (the boys in Green), I’m sixth from the left, back row.  As you will see, Theo, Daniel and Gregor were also there, playing for their team.  It was fabulous to find them there. (I am, though, delighted to say my team placed higher in the results!)

A great experience. Thank you to Hampton for supporting.
