Welcome to the Third Year Blog!

The Third Years heard a brilliant talk from Dominic Joseph OH (2002) during assembly on Monday morning. Dominic spoke about his career as a professional drummer and gave them an insight into running his advertising company, Captify. He reminded the boys to work hard, get good work experience, find and follow their own career path and really embrace all that Hampton has to offer. The School Captain delivered the weekly notices and the Headmaster delivered the sporting results and congratulated all those involved in the recent musical performances. The boys continued working on our oracy topic in PSHE on Thursday.

Here are some other highlights from the week:

HELP Level 2 Project Proposal Reminder

Choose an area that interests you for your project and politely ask a member of staff from the relevant department if he/she would be willing to act as your supervisor, then complete the HELP Level 2 Project Proposal Form and return it to SAW. I have attached the form here should you wish to email it to boys.

  • Arrange a meeting with your supervisor to talk through your ideas and plans and complete the HELP Level 2 Initial Plan Form
  • Begin your planning, preparation and research. Keep a Log of the work you have done, detailing the date and time taken. You may feel it necessary to have another informal meeting with your supervisor for some guidance
  • When you feel you are well on the way in producing your project, arrange a Mid-Project Review meeting with your supervisor. At the meeting, you should show your supervisor your work so far and outline what you need to do to complete the project. After the meeting, complete the HELP Level 2 Mid-Project Review Form. You may feel it necessary to have another informal meeting with your supervisor for some guidance
  • Once you have completed your project, arrange an End-of-Project Review meeting with your supervisor. At this meeting, you should reflect on your achievements in completing the project; what you have learned by doing the project; and what you would do differently next time. After the meeting, complete the HELP Level 2 Evaluation Form.

All the forms are available on firefly in extended learning / HELP / Level 2 (Third Year).

Academic scholars are expected to do a project!

Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party – Sunday 8 December

Any boy who would be willing to help out, even for only 30 mins to one hour, would be welcome – Hampton are in charge of the present wrapping from 11am until 12.30pm so volunteering then would help or any time in the afternoon from 2pm until 5pm.

Boys who are interested should sign up on the noticeboard outside Mr Clarke’s office or email Mr Clarke.

Talk! Neil Gresham OH (1989) – Tuesday 3 December, 12.45pm

As part of the School’s Talk! programme, we are very fortunate to be welcoming Neil Gresham OH (1989) to Hampton next Tuesday 3 December.  Neil will speak in the Lecture Theatre from 12.45pm and all members of the School are invited to what promises to be an incredibly engaging Talk!

As one of the original pioneers in coaching for climbing, Neil has been at the cutting edge of the British climbing scene for over two decades, performing at a high standard in disciplines ranging from sport climbing to deep water soloing, winter and traditional climbing. His talks are renowned for being inspirational, action-packed, white-knuckle rides, which showcase the diversity of climbing. Neil’s infectious enthusiasm brings the climbing experience to life and his talks provide an insight into the mindset that he’s used to push the limits during his life of climbing adventure.

It will be of particular interest to those involved in climbing, whether inside or outside School, together with those who have a love of the outdoors and adventurous activity!

UK Linguistics Olympiad Friday 29 November

Preparation for the UK Linguistics Olympiad begins Friday 29 November at 1.10pm in Room 27. The UK Linguistics Olympiad is a school competition, much like the Mathematics Challenge but with all the problem data taken from language. A typical problem presents some words or sentences in one the world’s 7,000 languages and asks for further forms or meanings, so competitors have to crack the code; a particularly popular kind of problem applies code-cracking to an unfamiliar writing system.

In the past, the UKLO has been of particular interest to those who enjoy classics, modern languages, linguistics and mathematics, but anyone in Third Year and above who thinks that they might be interested in taking part should come along.

Christmas Concerts

Two Christmas Concerts will take place next Thursday (5 December) and Friday (6 December), both starting at 7pm. A number of our choirs and ensembles will perform and Stephon Umashangar will be playing Grieg’s Piano Concerto (First Movement) with the Symphony Orchestra in both concerts as his U6 concerto. The first concert has already sold out but there will be a live link to a screen in the Main Hall if you would like to watch! There are still tickets available for the Friday concert and it would be lovely to see you there if you are free!

String Concert 21 January 2020

We are holding this year’s String Concert in the Hammond Theatre on Tuesday 21 January 2020 at 7pm. The concert can include performances from any string instrument players except electric guitars. Please think about any solos that you would like to perform but, in the event that there are too many pieces offered, priority will be given to senior players and ensembles. If you can get together with someone else to play a duet that would be great. Please keep pieces to a maximum of four minutes and only one piece per person.

Please speak to your teacher and let me know your pieces/groups by Friday 13 December 2019. We will need any piano accompaniments as soon as possible and if we do not receive them in good time and preferably by the end of this term, you will not be able to play.

Please send me an email if you would like to play, or sign up on the board in the Garrick.

If you don’t want to perform this time, please do come along to the concert and support the other string players, it should be a really good evening .

If you have any questions please contact me E.vanments@hamptonschool.org.uk

Inter-Form Christmas Series

It is time to start with our Christmas inter-form competitions.  The Third Year will start with a basketball tournament, on Thursday 5 December.

Apologies, but the teams must be no more than 8 players.

The second inter-form for Third Year before Christmas, will be table tennis – so others who are keen will have the chance to get involved.

Those playing should change as quickly as possible at the start of lunch into PE kit and head straight down to the Sports Hall.  Spectators welcome, but they must watch from the balcony.

On the final Thursday of the year, those interested will be able to play 2v2/3v3 basketball and volleyball, and can come throughout lunchtime, to fit in with their Christmas lunch timings.

U14 Sports Reports

Lots of sports reports this week, thanks to all contributors and keep sending in your match reports.

Football

Josh H reports on the U14A match against Riddlestown School:

The Hampton U14A team were back on the pitch again on Thursday as they convincingly beat Riddlestown School 2-0, putting in a solid performance and progressing in the Surrey Cup. Having arrived, warmed up and stepped on to the pitch, it immediately became clear to Hampton that the next 70 minutes were not going to be easy due to the opposition’s seemingly relentless attitude in the pressure that they applied and the sheer competition that came with every ball. However, within a few minutes, the slightly calmer, more ground-based football began to take effect as the home side began to showcase the range of their passing abilities that had already been seen on numerous occasions throughout the season. Until the half time whistle, play was largely uneventful in the way of exceptions to this well organised style of football in spite of some good saves at either end.

After a seemingly repetitive yet well constructed first 10 minutes of the second half, excitement started to creep in as more chances began to develop. Soon enough, due to some great tracking down and work rate, Chibby N dribbled around the keeper before passing the ball into an open net. From then on, with one team chasing for an equaliser and the other stringing together some lovely bits of play, more chances became almost inevitable. With some excellent battling at the back and in midfield for Hampton, the ball once again fell to Nwoko who took a touch, played an inch-perfect ball through to Paddy H who then slotted the ball home at the near post to add to his ever increasing goal tally this year. With two goals, a clean sheet and a fourth round to look forward to, it was a good day for the U14As who will be looking to win once again against the 2018 ESFA Finalists – Carshalton Boys in the next round.

It’s not just the U14A footballers who’ve been busy on the football pitch, as Ed J reports on the U14C team:

On Saturday, we played away at Royal Russell School versus their B team. We went into the game feeling confident because the team had been strengthened with some new players. Within the first five minutes we had scored and it soon became apparent that we were the dominant side. By the time we had got to half time we were 8-0 up, with goals from Ben R (2), Cameron J, Jack S, Monty R (2) and Joseph B (2). The most memorable goal was a low driven shot, from outside the box, slotted into the bottom corner by Jack S. The second half continued in much the same vein with Freddie B scoring an amazing hat trick. Further goals came from Dan C and Leo H. The game finished with a Hampton win of 13-0 with Daniel E and Matt B keeping a clean sheet. The whole team performed well but Man of The Match goes to Freddie B for his outstanding hat trick.

And finally, Sam G tells us about the U14D versus Chigwell School:

Facing Chigwell, Hampton realised that we needed to bring our A game. So we started really fast and scored two goals from Joe F and Harry T. From there we established our dominance and with great one-twos and quick passing, we managed to score goals rapidly, Joe E managed to get a hat trick very quickly and Joe F , Harry T and I managed to put our name on the score sheet. At half time the score was 10-1 to us. We had played really well and wanted to continue with the same momentum. Credit should be given for Chigwell’s great goal against Ben H. Mathew B was brought on with great effect putting two goals on the score sheet. We were playing with great link up play from the likes of Danny S and Kasra as we increased the score line. Our midfield really created many opportunities for our attack, and our defence were really solid, not letting Chigwell’s attack to break through. The final score was 15-1. Everyone played extremely well to create this score line. We worked well together and a big thanks goes to Chigwell for coming down from afar to play us, and our coach Mr Boardman for teaching us great passing and off the the ball play.

Have a great weekend!
