Welcome to the Third Year Blog!

It’s the end of the first full week of autumn term and the Third Year boys have certainly been making the most of being back at School! The main attraction of the week was undoubtedly Teambuilding Day on Thursday (more below) but the early part of the week was all about getting to know new teachers, settling back into classroom learning and making new friends.

The Assembly on Monday morning contained some powerful messages from Mr Lawrence on the global issue of genocide, and a reminder of the incredible work that the Genocide 80Twenty group does at Hampton to raise awareness of these horrific crimes against humanity.

Later on Monday, the boys had the pleasure of posing for their school portrait photos which will be destined to make an appearance on mantelpieces around South West London and Surrey in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to your emails and the blog for more details on how to order copies.

In other news, the boys have been keen to talk about the incredible achievement of Emma Raducanu this week at the US Open (see last week’s Question of the Week!), and rightly so. The British tennis player has clearly made a big impression on the Hampton boys and the nation as a whole, and her name has been heard frequently in enthusiastic conversations around the corridors in School this week.

Heads of Year Message

We were thrilled to watch the boys in action together on Thursday as they tackled a variety of problem-solving exercises with intelligence, enthusiasm, imagination, tenacity and good humour. As the sun shone down (as it always seems to for Teambuilding Day!) on us all enjoying the fresh air, the boys made the most of the opportunity to build new relationships within their Form Groups whilst having fun. It was hugely encouraging to witness the boys implementing our advice to communicate effectively and work together as a team. These are strong early signs that the boys have understood and are attempting to achieve the aims we set them at the start of term:

  • Strive for Personal Best
  • Be Kind
  • Get Involved
  • Speak Up

There are details later in this blog of a range of co-curricular opportunities for boys to try out. We would encourage all Third Years to make the most of the first half term until October as a time to try out as many clubs as possible – you’ll never know unless you try it! Full details can be found via the: Co-curricular Guide 2021-22

It is important that all boys continue with the programme of self-administered asymptomatic LFD testing at regular intervals (twice a week) at home. As previously, boys must not attend the School site if:

  • they have symptoms of Covid-19 (boys must complete a PCR test if symptomatic)
  • they have received a positive Covid-19 test result

If any boy is unable to attend School due to ill health, or for one of the reasons listed above, please notify the School by contacting Form Tutors and absence@hamptonschool.org.uk.

We look forward to welcoming parents at the Pastoral Forum on Monday evening. For everyone’s benefit, but particularly those parents who are unable to attend on Monday, we will be circulating key resources and information from the event to all Third Year parents via SchoolPost next week.

Boys – Please remember to let us, your Form Tutors or the relevant subject teachers know if you are having any difficulties. Well done and enjoy the weekend everyone!

Best wishes

Mr T Rigby & Miss V Smith

Teambuilding

After a truly memorable Thursday on the School fields, on what was a superb and sunny occasion, 3H emerged victorious on Teambuilding Day after a series of impressive collaborative efforts across a variety of tasks. Many congratulations to them and their Form Tutors, Mr Hurst and Mr Trivedi, on a successful day of building camaraderie in their Form. In truth though, all the Third Year boys were winners and important skills such as communication, problem-solving, decision making and respectfulness were all evident. We hope the boys enjoyed the day and all that it had to offer – it was certainly inspirational to watch!

Third Year Pastoral Forum – Monday 20 September

A reminder to parents that Third Year Pastoral Forum is taking place on Monday evening, starting from 5pm. This will be an opportunity for parents to meet their son’s Form Tutor/s and ask any pertinent questions that they may have. Third Year boys should not attend this evening.

U14 Sports News

The U14 Football and Rugby teams have resumed training and are looking forward to the rest of term, and Rowing has commenced for the J14s, with swim tests on the horizon and all looking forward to getting out on the river this weekend!

The U14 footballers had a block fixture against Bede’s last weekend and, with some typically skilful and astute play, the U14 A and B teams came away with strong wins. Goals from captain Quinn S, Dexter B and Alex A helped the A team to a 3-0 win, and Joshi RdM, Ben W and captain Richard P were all on target for the Bs as they won 3-1. Not content with his B team goal, Joshi took part in an Athletics event over the weekend where he ran 3km in just over 11 minutes – wow!

Lots of our specialist sports clubs are up and running and it’s been great to see the Third Year boys getting stuck in this week! We also know that many of the boys take part in activities outside of School over the weekend, and Will McT was delighted to report that his club football team won their fixture 13-1!

Clubs and Societies

Politics

A brand new Politics & Current Affairs club is starting this year for Lower School boys. If you enjoy watching the news, want to understand more about political events at home and abroad and enjoy debating and discussing controversial topics with your peers, this could be for you! Each week will involve a topical quiz and a discussion of the biggest political news story.

This club starts next Thursday 23 September, at 1:10pm in room 99. No prior political knowledge is needed and you don’t have to come every week. Please see or email Miss Field in the Politics Department if you have any questions.

CCF

There is an exciting opportunity for you to join the Combined Cadet Force. Cadets are made up of pupils from LEH, Hampton School and Hampton High and parades take place on Fridays 4:15 – 5:50pm at LEH.

If you like adventurous activities, (walking, climbing, mountain biking to name a few), camping and eating MOD rations (yum!), learning how to shoot and, possibly for a few, flying; then the CCF might be for you!

See either Mr Wilson in the Physics department or Mr Holdaway in Design and Engineering department for more information.

Tennis

Tennis Club will be starting on Wednesday 22 September on the green Tennis Courts. This is a session aimed at strong Tennis players who are aiming to play in the A team this summer. Please get changed in the upstairs Sports Hall changing rooms and be on the courts ready to start by 12:45pm. If you have any questions, come and find me (Mr Saunders) in the Classics Office or drop me an email at k.saunders@hamptonschool.org.uk .
