WELCOME TO THE SECOND YEAR BLOG!

The week kicked off with Open Day on Saturday and it was fantastic to see so many of you helping out around the School, whether in departments or doing tours, you all made us incredibly proud – well done and thank you!

The co-curricular clubs are keeping you busy, and we love hearing about the range of things you can get up to in a single lunchtime – read on to find out more about Breakdancing Club and Spanish Fiesta Club!

TUTOR QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Each week the pupils decide on a question to ask all the Second Year Form Tutors. This week…

Which of these fictional characters would you most like to be your teacher at Hampton?

  1. Dumbledore – Miss Holt
  2. Optimus Prime – 2B, 2H, Mr Worrall,
  3. Homer Simpson – 2W, 2L, 2P
  4. Miss Honey – Miss Mattinson, Mr Harrison, Miss Tiller

I’m surprised at the lack of votes for Dumbledore! But as Miss Mattinson said ‘Impossible to choose between Dumbledore and Miss Honey. Although, in light of ‘DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE’, I’d probably go for Miss Honey…’

Have you ever had a burning question you’ve always wanted to ask your form tutors?! If so, then please send your suggestions for next week’s Tutor Question Time to b.tiller@hamptonschool.org.uk.

Open Morning

On Saturday we all came into School for Open Morning. This was a HUGE event not only because hundreds of families came to Hampton, but we got to miss the afternoon of school, and this never happens. So, when we came in that morning the school looked amazing with balloons, volcanoes, floating balls, many displays and much more. It also helped me find out that walking round the School being friendly and polite for a few hours could be such hard work. Around Hampton, the different departments decorated their areas in different but cool ways. Including, a model volcano (including smoke) in the Geography department, a drumming workshop in the Music department, international cuisine in the Modern Languages department and many more. Along with the various fixtures going on outside and all the decoration, Open Morning was amazing.

Meet Mr Worrall!

Our weekly interviews are a great opportunity for you to find found out a little bit more about your Tutors! So, thank you to Will H, Ridhaan G and Yusuf R who interviewed Mr Worrall, Physics Teacher and one half of 2W’s tutor team!

When you were younger, what did you want to be?

Gosh, that’s a good question, I didn’t really have many career dreams as a child, but maybe a golfer or cricketer.

Who is your hero and why?

Probably Ben Stokes because of the things he has gone through and the way he has come back from them.

What is the best thing about being a Second Year form tutor?

You get to see the second years really start to the develop strong friendships and for them to begin to understand the things they really love.

What do you think is the most important invention of all time?

The electromagnetic generator, converting heat into electrical energy is crucial to all industrial processes. Without it there would be no national grid.

What are your favourite things to do in free time?

In my free time I enjoy playing golf, going to Stamford Bridge to see Chelsea play (and lose) and playing the drums.

What is your favourite movie?

I’m not hugely into movies, but I found the Imitation Game really enjoyable.

If you had a million pounds, what would you spend it on?

I would probably spend it on a house and a nice holiday to Barbados. I used to live there as a very young child, and it would be great to return.

Tennis tournament!

Last Saturday I participated in a tennis tournament; it went very well. In the first round I came up against a difficult opponent, he had all the equipment, a gargantuan bag and about three waters. However, I approached him with a good mindset and played my absolute best. After a tiring match I ended up winning 4-3 (7-2) 4-1. Amazed at how well I played, I felt proud. A little later, progressing into the big games, I entered the court however, I was against the first seed and we both fought hard, constantly out of breath, always running and never resting. We both wanted to move into the final of the tournament. I took the first set 4-0, I was confident, but he found his strength and punched straight back 0-4! We were going into the tie break nervous but energised. I quickly took the upper hand 3-1, but he came back 5-8, I knew I could lose it all here, but I kept fighting, 6-8, 7-8, 8-8, 9-8… 10-8! I roared COME ON! Next was the final, I gave it my all and came close but didn’t finish on top, still a great tournament. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without Hampton’s training in lunch times.

Club of the Week!

Every week we’ll try and feature a new co-curricular club. This week Ben F (2J) tells us all about Breakdancing, Popping and Locking Club – there’s even a video included!

Come to locking and popping with Mr Berezhnoi in F80 on a Monday lunchtime. This week we filmed ourselves breakdancing to some cracking tunes which included freestyle dancing and working together as an ensemble to create a mega music video. We are all completely new to breakdancing and have never done it before, but it just feels so good to dance! I love it and I hope you will when you come along!

Spanish Fiesta Club!

I’m currently studying Spanish, and I’ve been enjoying learning about different words and phrases, but I wanted to build upon my cultural knowledge. Thank goodness Spanish Fiesta exists!

Spanish Fiesta has taught me many, many elements of Spanish culture that even helped me learn more vocabulary! One of my favourites was how we learned about different foods and recipes through the “Tapas” project late last year, but it’s happening this year too. The entire gist of it is that you make a Spanish/Hispanic dish and bring it into School, and everybody at the club gets to eat it and rate it. One dish is brought in by a different person a week. We even change the style of the club depending on the time of year, for example, in November we do activities related to “El Dia de los Muertos” by making skull masks!

But the most special thing of the club is that we, the club attendees, get to decide the club activities. It’s basically 80% of the club – us. You can suggest Spanish board games, movies and even monthly projects! So, what are you waiting for? Spanish Fiesta is on Wednesday at 1 to 1.25 pm. We’re so excited to see you there!

Tawain Travels – part 3

Last week we heard from Ian L (2F) about The Night Markets in Taiwan, this week he continues to tell us about Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village.

Over the summer holidays, I went to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village where I learnt about the aboriginal way of life. In Taiwan, there used to be only nine main tribes but in recent years the numbers increased to sixteen main tribes. The sixteen tribes are the Paiwan, the Ami, the Thao, the Bunun, the Atayal, the Puyuma, the Rukai, the Tsou, the Saisiyat, the Tao, the Kavalan, the Truku, the Sakizaya, the Seediq, the Hla’alua and the Kanakanavu. In Taiwan, the biggest tribe is the Amis tribe has a population of approximately 200,000, which comprises 37.1% of the total indigenous population. The Amis mainly live along the East coast of Taiwan. Taiwanese aboriginals are part of the Austronesian people. They originated from a prehistoric seaborne migration, known as the Austronesian expansion, from Taiwan, circa 3000 to 1500 BCE. Austronesian people are the same type of people of the Australian aboriginals. They travelled from Taiwan to as west as Madagascar, the east as Easter Islands or maybe Americas and as south as New Zealand.
