Welcome to the Third Year Blog!

Despite the end of term approaching, the Third Year Hamptonians have continued the trend for this year and remained enthusiastic and fully engaged in all there is on offer at Hampton.

Last weekend, our U14A, B & C Cricket teams took on RGS Guildford and our Tennis teams played fixtures against Kings’ College School, Wimbledon. Later in the week, our cricketers were in action again, this time hosting Eton College in the annual block fixture, and our Third Year Rowers headed to the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta.

The main event of this week was Third Year Prizegiving Evening.  With the pace of life at Hampton, it can be easy not to take the time to look back and reflect, and so the evening was a fantastic opportunity to do just that.  Well done to those of you who had your achievements celebrated!

Good luck to those of you representing the School this weekend – the final one this academic year.  I hope you enjoy reading the rest of the blog – have a great weekend everyone!

Heads of Year Message

With just one week left of this academic year, we really enjoyed celebrating the achievements of this cohort of Third Years at our Prizegiving event on Wednesday evening. It is impossible for us to recognise every achievement or worthy act with a prize, and we are well aware how many pupils deserve recognition across a wide range of academic and co-curricular achievements throughout the year. Please rest assured that these achievements are recognised and valued by teachers at each and every performance, sports fixture, grade card or event – even if a prize was not forthcoming on this occasion.

As well the Founders’ Day Assembly on Tuesday next week, there will be a Mufti Day on Friday (last day of term) to raise funds towards Form Charity.

Third Years, we hope you make the most of the last week of term. Please throw yourselves into the activities on offer and keep supporting one another with kindness right until the end of term. As always, do reach out to us or your Form Tutors if you are having any difficulties.

Best wishes

Mr Rigby & Mr Moore

Notice – new school laptops (this notice was also relayed to Third Years via their Form Tutors):

Pupils and parents should be aware that the school’s network filters monitor all devices for inappropriate language, inappropriate content or concerning behaviour. The new school laptops are subject to the school’s network filters for online activity at any time – i.e. searches made at home will be picked up by the school’s network filters on arrival at school. Pupils must recognise that the laptops are for school work only, in school and at home. Any activity that meets the threshold for concern will be followed up in school.

Sports Round Up

U14A & B Tennis vs King’s College School, Wimbledon by Marin M:

On the 25th of July last weekend the tennis A and B squad travelled to King’s College School in Wimbledon to play fast four doubles which is the first to get to 4 games wins the match, it was a warm, sunny morning and everyone was eager and ready to play some tennis when we got nearer and nearer to the start time. We all tried our best but most importantly we all enjoyed ourselves and at the end the B team Squad drew with KCS and the A team squad lost 6 to 3. In the end we all had a wonderful time, and we give many thanks to Mr. Cross and Mr. Saunders for making our match possible.

U14 Rugby Sevens Season Report by Mr Lashley:

The 7s season was very successful on all accounts. Opposition teams quickly acknowledged that with skilful playmakers, and dangerous threats all over the pitch, notably the wing duo of captain Omar K and Leo L who played not unlike the deadly USA 7s pairing of Perry Baker and Carlin Isles, this was a team that would cause a lot of problems. Whilst the side stuttered a little bit at Surrey 7s, Orleans Park 7s and Reigate 7s, there were 3 tournaments which can certainly be highlighted. The squad achieved an impressive 3rd place finish at Warwick 7s, after a mammoth 60-5 win v Portsmouth Grammar School to top the group, and a statement win v the notoriously strong Kirkham Grammar in quarters. The team then went largely untroubled at Ibstock 7s, with their quality far too great for the sides there to handle. This culminated in a 21-14 win against Latymer to be crowned Ibstock 7s champions. The final tournament was the national Rosslyn Park 7s, with over 200 teams entering. The group came down to a “win and in” clash v QEGS Wakefield, another strong side who were toppled 28-19. A deserved shout-out to Will Squire, who was equally good with the ball at his feet as he was with it in his hands – he missed just 3 of his 24 conversions at Rosslyn Park! Entry into the cup was secured when St Peter’s York were beaten in a tight affair, with Ben Rowe scoring the decisive winner. A loss to eventual runners-up, George Watson’s College from Scotland, and a win on the main showpiece pitch against local rivals St Paul’s meant the team finished a remarkable eleventh in the country.

U14 Borough Athletics 4x100m Relay Champions and Record Holders:

Hampton Athletes are having a fantastic 2022 season, with a series of strong performances at recent meets and the Richmond Borough Athletics competition proved no different. Hampton’s Third Year athletes finished second in the team event against a very strong Grey Court School. Highlights included Jayden Oni winning the 300m event in a personal best time and Quinn Schutter coming first in the triple jump with another personal best.

The Third Year relay team of Daniel M, Sam M-J, Quinn S and Omar K finished first in an exciting race with a new School and Borough record. Well done to everyone who took part!

Dante P – National League Winner

Congratulations to Dante P who helped his basketball team, the Richmond Knights, to win the National League recently – it is the first time that a local team has won this league, so a significant achievement indeed.

On the water

The rowers have been focusing on small boat skills; learning to take control of their steering (rather than relying on the cox in the big boats), balancing the more narrow and tippy single sculls, and learning to push themselves as individuals rather than as a crew. These skills are essential for their development and success at the higher age groups so it is great to have the opportunity to spend time on them while the water is warmer. Take a look at what they’ve been up to on the water below:

Interform Competition

Since releasing the results of last week’s Codebreaking Interform Competition, the results of the Interform Rowing have also been finalised.  167 boys from the year group took part, rowing a total of 152,449 metres between them.  The results were as follows:

1st    3B

2nd   3F

3rd    3D

4th     3A

5th    3E

6th     3G

7th    3H

8th     3J

9th   3C

Congratulations also go to the following boys, who rowed the furthest in their respective categories:

Place Rowers Non-rowers

2nd Monty H Arjan W
3rd Max R Sam M-J

The long awaited Interform Basketball took place today and was a thoroughly enjoyable and competitive event.  Full results and standings, as well as the overall winners of the Interform Competition this year, will be revealed in next week’s blog – stay tuned!

LITTER PICKING CLUB

Miss Rommer is planning to run litter picks during lunchtime (13.10 – 13.45) on Tuesdays in the last couple of weeks of term, where staff and pupils will be visiting local roads around the School to help clean up the often large amounts of litter scattered in the area. The aims behind the litter pick are to:

  1. Do something good for the planet by clearing up the mess that we leave behind in our everyday lives
  2. Do something good for the local community
  3. To raise awareness of the issue of litter. It is easy to miss the odd item of litter, however once you take part in a litter pick and see first-hand how much litter there is, it becomes hard to un-see the problem and spurs you on to help the cause of combatting litter
  4. To provide an enjoyable activity

If you are interested in joining the club, please could you either email Miss Rommer directly or visit the library to sign up. Parents will need to confirm that they are happy for you to take part and will be sent an email via SchoolPost where they will be able to do so. Due to the availability of staff members we will be limited to 15 pupils currently. This will be on a first come first serve basis, so please sign up as soon as possible to increase your chances of taking part.

UPCOMING CLUBS

As we enter the final half term, it’s your last chance to try something new from the wide range of activities that are offered at Hampton.  Here’s a reminder of ones that you might like to check out:

  • Croquet Club takes place on a Wednesday from 1-1:45pm between the Porter’s Lodge and the tennis courts at the front of school.  No previous experience necessary – just a steely streak of competitiveness!  Come and enjoy the sunshine – all welcome.
  • Psychology Club will be running this term on Thursday at 1.15-1.45pm in Room 98 – all Third Years are welcome to come along. We will be discussing fascinating psychological phenomena such as déjà vu and the Placebo Effect, and even be conducting our own experiments!
  • Garden Club takes place in the Geography Department Garden from 1pm on Thursdays. If you are interested in how to grow your own food from seed, propagate plants from cuttings and generally want to experience a rewarding and therapeutic new life skill then come along and see what green-fingered Hamptonians are up to.
  • Photography Club will be happening on a weekly basis this term – a chance for any budding photographer interested in developing their skills. It will take place in Art5 every Tuesday and will run by Aryan S in the Sixth Form.
  • Current Affairs Club is up and running! The club is open to all in the First to Fourth year, and happens every Friday at 1.20pm in Room 99.  From exciting debates to interesting news stories that you may have otherwise missed, this club is all about digesting what’s going on in the world in a fun and engaging way.  Attendance is not compulsory week on week, so if the club is not for you – no worries!

  • Climbing Club happens on a Friday at 12.35pm by the climbing wall. Any level of experience is welcome – come and try something new!
  • Philosophy Circle run by Mr Scott also happens on a Thursday at 1.20pm, taking place in Room 21. Come along and get involved in some thought-provoking discussions!

Dingbats

In last week’s DINGBATS feature you were asked to work out what common phrase was described by the clue below.  The answer was of course: pie in the sky!

Good luck for this week – Can you work out what word is described by the clue below?

CONNECTION CORNER

Well done to the everyone who had a go at last week’s Connection Corner. Merits go to all those who correctly guessed that the answers were all to do with Christmas. Big shout out to Monty S, Nathaniel C, Arun D, Lewis W, Mikael N, Rohan L, Will M, Eddie H, Viren A, Thomas T-S, Oscar P, Oliver D, Ed M, Alex R, Nathan N, Joe G, Samuel B and Thomas W-M.

Another tricky one to have a go at over the weekend:

In case, you’re still perplexed here are the answers from the last week’s conundrum:

What is the capital city of Belgium? Brussels

Who presents This Morning alongside Phillip Schofield? Holly Willoughby

In which country was the Ottoman Empire centered? Turkey

Which Northern Line station lies between King’s Cross and Old Street? Angel

Connection answer: All things to do with Christmas (brussel sprouts, holly, turkey, angel)

Have a great weekend!
