Welcome to the Second Year Blog!

Only one week to go until half term and it really has flown by! This week, thank you to Miss Walsh for being interviewed, and as ever, for the contributions from our blog reps on clubs and oracy!

MERITS

Congratulations to the following boys for achieving a significant merit milestone before half term, fantastic work!

Elliot Cundy – 10

Mikael Nur – 10

Sam Moylan-Jones – 10

TUTOR INTERVIEWS

Our weekly interviews, are a great opportunity for you to find found out a little bit more about your Tutors! So, thank you to Eddie (2J) who interviewed Miss Walsh; one half of 2J’s tutor team:

What did you want to be when you were younger?

When I was about 10 I wanted to be an interior designer (I used to ‘design’ loads of houses on The Sims).

What were your motivations behind becoming an English teacher?

I’ve always loved English and I wanted to keep it in my life after university (at that point, I’d also been doing interviews at law firms, which I quickly realised was definitely not my calling…)

What is your favourite book that you have read and why?

Right now, I’d probably say ‘There but for the’ by Ali Smith. She has an amazing way of creating lots of vibrant, authentic characters; and uses language in such a playful, clever way. I also LOVE ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, which is super heart-warming and always makes me feel calm.

What is the best book that you have studied as a pupil or teacher?

Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ – an absolute 12/10!

What did you have to do to become an English teacher, and how hard was it?

I started working in a boarding school straight after university and completed my teacher training at the same time. (I also had to do a placement at another school and write some essays!) It was harder than I expected and I remember being really surprised at how different it was to what I had imagined when I was at school, but it’s a really fun job – I love it!

How many different schools have you taught at?

Hampton is my third.

PHSE – ORACY

In PHSE the boys have been learning about the important skill of oracy! Next week they will be putting into practice everything they have learnt on how to present to an audience! From thinking about speaking slowly and clearly, to standing confidently, and making eye contact with their audience! Raphael (2W) tells us more:

In 2W this week and last week we focused on two subjects, freedom of speech and the right to privacy. The class split into groups and started working. There were a variety of ideas. Some groups did PowerPoints and others did a few scenes. Looking around the room it was great to see how well people got on with their groups and how much fun they were having. We will be performing our scenes/presentations next week to our form tutors and I’m sure everyone is extremely excited. I can’t wait to see the other groups work and to perform mine in front of my class.

CLUBS

Let’s learn more about Philosophy Circle from Patrick (2H):

This week, my friends and I attended the Philosophy Circle.

We were prompted to discuss the meaning of ‘nothing’. Can there be nothing? What even is nothing? And were slowly introduced to new concepts such as “is space (or volume) a thing” or eventually “what about time?”. It’s fascinating to reckon with common phrases or concepts and to dig deeper to try and see the meaning. As always, in philosophy there is no concrete or correct answer and therefore all opinions or theories are accepted and welcomed. I would definitely recommend Philosophy Circle to any pupils in the Second Year.

Current co-curricular activities

As we approach the half term, I would encourage all of you to have a good think about what activities you have been involved in and whether you have been making the most of your lunchtimes! It would be fantastic if you all try to attend at least one new club after the holidays!

World Mental Health Day

This year’s World Mental Health Day is tomorrow, Saturday 10 October. It comes at a time of considerable challenges for many people and during a period when all of us have seen our daily lives change considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. To mark WMH Day 2020, Hampton School’s Lead Counsellor, Mr Uccelli, has recorded a short message to remind us all to think about how we can support both ourselves and those around us.

ART COMPETITION

Last week’s theme was ‘people’, take a look at this impressive entry from Avi (2H)

This week’s theme is ‘Autumn’. You can use any medium you wish, simply take a picture of your artwork and send it to r.kugele@hamptonschool.org.uk , alongside some text explaining how you created it. This will be the final week of our art competition so go on give it a go!

Have a great weekend!
