WELCOME TO THE FIRST YEAR BLOG!
This has been a busy week for the First Years, with the U12A footballers heading off for their fixture against the Kingston Academy on Thursday, and our Badminton teams out in force this Friday! The First Years were also visited by Sixth Form members of our Diversity and Inclusion group, who spoke to the boys about gender stereotypes and how to combat these in their everyday lives. Next week sees a typically busy end to this half term, as the First Years have a chance to try out new clubs in No Limits Week, and Monday sees our inaugural Interform Chess tournament!
NO LIMITS WEEK IS COMING!
Next week is No Limits Week, in which the boys are encouraged to try out some new clubs they haven’t had a chance to before, or simply to do something different.
Are you a budding artist? Try Art Club or Architecture Club! Interested in Music? Go along to Music Tech! Or do you fancy something sporty? Have a go at Badminton or Climbing!
We will be asking the boys to attend at least three different clubs over the week and tell us about their experiences; there is something for everyone, so get experimenting!
Don’t forget to check the Co-curricular Guide in advance, so you can plan your week.
CO-CURRICULAR TIMETABLE 2021-22
Royal Academy Success
First Year pupil Leonardo F (1W) had a piece of his artwork selected for the Royal Academy Summer Show and the young artist has now heard that his piece has been chosen for their annual calendar.
Leonardo spent weeks carving his lino print ‘The Colours of my Notes’ which shows him playing an acoustic guitar. It was selected from thousands of entries to go on display in the 2021 Young Artists’ Summer Show.
Leonardo is delighted that his piece of art has been chosen:
I am really honoured that my art has been chosen and feel very lucky. I have been carving lino prints for over three years now and really enjoy the process which is both relaxing and very satisfying
Lower School Art Exhibition
If you’ve walked through the Art Gallery space this week, you’ll have seen some impressive artistic creations in the Lower School Art Exhibition. From stunning sculptures to creative lino cuts, have a closer look when you’re next in the Art Department. Mrs Williams tells us more:
CLUB OF THE WEEK
To follow up on last week’s piece on snakes, Josh M-J (1J) tells us a bit more about Biology Club:
Biology Club is held from 12:35 to 1:15pm in B2 and it is run by Miss Mimnagh. At Biology Club, you learn about different things and do different activities. For example, this week we grew a plant. Also, we sometimes do special events such as we were given snakes last week. I like biology club because it combines learning with fun and collaborative activities.
National Storytelling Week
This week has been National Storytelling Week and it has been great to hear that so many of our budding authors are attending The Writers’ Room club to hone their creative writing skills – Darshan S (1H) and Alexander L (1F) tell us about their story ideas:
We’ve also heard from some of our teachers and pupils who have been introducing us to their favourite books. Can you spot Filip (1P) in the video below, reading an extract from his favourite book Peter Duck from the Swallow and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome:
CALLING ALL BAKING SUPERSTARS!
Channel 4 are looking for young budding bakers between 9 and 12 years old to apply for the next series of Junior Bake Off! Interested bakers can apply online at here; filming takes place in July, but applications close on Sunday 13 March 2022.
As inspiration, Freddie T (1W) recently entered the Fortnum and Mason Platinum Pudding competition, making and writing a recipe for his own dessert (a cross between a summer pudding and a trifle), which looks absolutely amazing! Well done, Freddie!
TUTEE OF THE WEEK
Each week, Tutors in the First Year team nominate a boy who they have been particularly impressed with and Mr Hill and Mrs Peattie will provide the boy with a football to use on the 3G for the week!
This week’s Tutee of the Week is James P (1W). James has really impressed us with his kindness towards his peers and his consistent organisation and enthusiasm in lessons. Well done, James!
SPECIAL SHOUT OUTS!
Dominic N (1L) has recently achieved Distinction in his Grade 5 Music Theory, with a fantastic score of 67/75! Dominic is putting his theory knowledge to good use, playing the piano and the bassoon. Well done, Dominic!
We love to hear about what you have been getting up to outside of school. Please do send any information about any of your achievements through to Mrs Ziegler (h.ziegler@hamptonschool.org.uk).
Unsilenced: Celebrating Women Composers
You are warmly invited to join us on Friday 11 February at 4.30pm for a special concert to round off this busy half term. ‘Unsilenced’ is a concert honouring music written by women composers, most of whom have been unfairly neglected through history solely because of their gender.
We hope you are able to join us for this very special event involving a number of pianists, some guest instrumentalists and also some poetry written by women writers.
Tickets are free and can be reserved here.
