Those of you with more sensitive olifactory systems may detect the tangy aroma of chlorine around this week’s bulletin. We have just returned from a very exciting Lower School Swimming Gala at Hampton open air pool, in which the boys have been competing in a series of individual and relay races. Congratulations to the boys of 1P, who displayed aquatic nimbleness of Phelpsian proportions to secure the title. The gala was also the final event in the Founders’ Cup, the Inter-Form competition that runs over the whole year. Second place was shared between 1P and 1L, but well done to the winners 1J. Mr Roland has secured bragging rights amongst the First Year Tutor team – well done, sir!
On Wednesday, we were all off on the Physics trip to the Winchester Science Centre. The boys all enjoyed a fascinating show in the planetarium, stopping off at Mars and Uranus on an incredible voyage through the solar system and out into intergalactic deep space. We then had time to explore the museum’s interactive exhibits – the “Journey Through the Colon” walkway proving popular – before taking part in the K’Nex challenge. The task was to build the highest possible free-standing structure out of K’Nex in half an hour. Whilst some ambitious towers overreached the limits of structural engineering, with messy consequences played out to shrieks of anguish from their designers, and cackles of delight from competitors, congratulations to the Group 2 winners Luke Bland, Roman Feron-Clark, Quentin Duff and Edward Finnett, who constructed an edifice measuring 249cm. Group 1 (comprising 1L, 1P and 1W) had their own separate competition – I am afraid I do not know the results of this one, but I am sure the distinguished careers in architecture await.
Our tennis players had a very successful day yesterday, winning the Surrey League title. Having qualified for the event by virtue of strong performances earlier in the season, the boys beat St George’s College in the semi-final, before winning 5-1 against KCS in the final. Many congratulations to Billy Atkinson, Rohan Vasudev, Jai Saha, Ben Bird, Rafferty Lucking and Xander Wright.
Our cricketers recorded some god wins over Berkhamsted last weekend. Fergus MacEacharn took two wickets for the U12Bs as we dismissed the opposition for 103, in pursuit of our score of 113-6. Thomas Simm’s 47 retired, and good contributions from Ethan Knight and Adhish Rao, were the mainstays of the U12Cs 157-4, and excellent bowling from Sam Walker and Alex Bush meant that Berkhamsted were reduced to the slightly unorthodox score of 44-12 in reply. Four wickets for Aayan Sheikh were instrumental in helping the U12B team beat Trinity School by 15 runs.
And finally, well done to the boys who have received their merit certificates this week: Min Jea Liew and Tanveer Zafar (40 merits), and Nayaaz Hashim and Ben Francis (120 merits).
