Welcome to a bumper edition of the Third Year blog. Apologies to regular readers for the missing edition last week. The author was confined to a sick bed.
Many Third Years spent the back end of last week enjoying the cold weather – snowball fights and sledging among the Friday evening activities after boys were dismissed 40 minutes early on Friday due to severe weather warnings and travel safety concerns.

This week has felt much more like the beginning of spring, and with the warmer weather, sport could return to our playing fields. The colder weather last week did not stop our U14B footballers in their quest for cup glory.
U14B Football Match Report – ESFA Semi-final
Last Monday, the U14Bs boarded a coach at 7.45 in the morning, with the temperature below freezing. The coach was bound for Exeter, and an ESFA Cup Semi-Final v St Luke’s Science and Sport College. Five-and-a-half-hours later, the match kicked off. An early period of Hampton pressure lead to several shots on goal and a few corners. After a last-ditch save by the opposition goalkeeper resulted in yet another corner, Sandy M headed home from close range to break the deadlock. Soon after the game restarted, St. Luke’s equalised from a corner. Hampton had the momentum however, and this was rewarded when a cross-come-shot from Sam W went in.
The game restarted slightly late, as Finlo C’s glasses were securely bandaged to his head, in compliance with FA regulations regarding eyewear. With the wind and a goalkeeper who could land the ball in our penalty area from a goal kick, St. Luke’s appeared to have the advantage in the second half. However, this only spurred Hampton on, with two goals netted by Rohan S in quick succession. When Fergus M was clattered to the ground in the opposition’s box, Rohan stepped up and rifled the penalty home to grab his third hat-trick of our cup run. After a late consolation goal, the tie was concluded. Hampton won by a convincing score line of 5-2!
Great game, well done everyone! Thanks to Mr Burke and Mr Lucas, we managed to play on the only day of the week that it didn’t snow! Thank you to over a dozen family members who came and supported us. In the final, expected to take place in May at Stoke City FC, we look forward to playing Sandbach. A well-rounded team performance overall. Roll on the final!
U14D Football Match Report – vs. Wetherby
On Thursday, the D team played against Wetherby’s U14 B team. The game started off with a deflected goal from their striker, 1-0. Leon G played a long through ball into Jamie L, who finished with a calm, composed driven shot. A few minutes later, the D team conceded a penalty, from which Wetherby scored to make it 2-1. A couple of minutes from half time, Luke M played a long ball towards Leon G, who finished from close range, 2-2. The D team pushed for a winner in the second half but could not find one. The game ended in a 2-2 draw!
U14A 7s Rugby
During Hampton U14s impressive tournament win at the Orleans Park 7s, Arthur Hopley especially enjoyed the win over Halliford (21-14)
Tournament report:
“With the disappointment of tournaments being called of a week before, it was good to play another tournament. We started of the tournament against the hosts with a fairly convincing 45-0 win over them. We knew it would not be that easy as the rest of the day progressed. We were shown that during the second game against Gunnersbury. At half time we found ourselves down 14-0. However, tries by Ben Freer and Ollie Verny-White made the game 14-12. We had a scrum with no time left, and were able to find a try with Max Leman scoring to finish 19-14. Following another convincing win over Grey Court we were up against the equally strong Halliford School. Again, at half time we were down 14-0. Then 21-7 midway through the second half, thanks to a try from Ben Freer. However, with tries from Ethan Knight and a brilliant inception from Fraser Dunlop, we found ourselves at 21-21 with a line-out for the last play. Ollie was able to score to remain unbeaten in the competition. Convincing wins against Fulham Boys and Isleworth and Syon saw us take the well-deserved trophy. ”

After a very exciting weekend of Six Nations Rugby, Shane Boden’s Five Pressup Penalties emerged as the highest scoring team for that weekend; he can collect his edible prize from the Heads of Year. For the first time, an official overall table is available as well – have a look. Looks like a lot of Gummi Bears for Herr Studt at the moment, though Shane Bowden, Ethan Knight and Tom Ketel are hot on his heels. Round 4 commences this weekend!
