Art?  Beekeeping?  Chess?  The number and range of co-curricular clubs at Hampton is staggering.  Here Kabir and Rohi tell us all about Arabic club and Junior Debating, both of which take place on Thursday lunchtimes:

Have you ever tried reading in a mirror, well guess what we have been learning? To read from right to left.  Arabic, a very intriguing language, is now open to learn for all students. On Thursday lunchtimes Ms Carmichael runs a language session in room 29 with a fun and relaxed approach.  In the last six weeks we have picked up much of the alphabet and have explored simple conversations.  For those looking for an adventure or wanting to carve a niche, come have a goKabir Sait – 2P

In debating club, we are sorted into two teams and have one week to plan a debate on a subject set by Mrs Peattie. One team is the Proposition, and one the Opposition.  Last week, we considered: This House believes home-schooling should be banned.  Two people from each team spoke.  There is an opening speech (two minutes long), another speech (two minutes long) and a closing speech (one minute). But before the closing speech the audience may ask questions to help the lead speakers of the two teams piece together the closing speech.  I find debating club very enjoyable because it is fun and it helps me develop my presenting and debating skills. My favourite topic of debate last year was: Is Father Christmas real?   Junior debating is open to 1st to 3rd Years. The club takes place on Thursdays from 12:35 to 13:00 in room 80, in the History department, and is supervised my Mrs Peattie.  Rohi Popham  – 2L

This week we get to say a hearty congratulations to the U13 A and B rugby teams – both of whom achieved their first wins of the season over the weekend.  Sam Davidson, Luke Michels and Ollie Stokes tell us how their teams stormed their way to victory against St Benedict’s:

The U13 A rugby team set off for St Benedict’s School, on Saturday the 8th October. It was a great success, with a final score of 25-15 in favour of Hampton. The first half ended with Hampton trailing behind 10-5 after a strong St Benedict’s start. However, tries from Ben Wix (2J), Tomasz Findlater (2W) and a hat trick from winger Ben Freer (2W) set us comfortably in the lead. Shortly after, we suffered a slight scare with St Benedict’s pulling a try back and reducing the deficit to 10 points.  The match finished and we were greeted with happy faces from the coaches and great sense of relief after a tough game. This brought us our first win of the season. Well done, Hampton!   Sam Davidson and Luke Michels – 2J

Last Saturday, the rugby Bs brought heart to the pitch, and found their first win of the season against St. Benedict’s, one of Hampton’s biggest rivals. We started well with some earlier tries from Ollie Stokes, Ollie Glenn and Luke McNamara (all 2W), and finished up at half time 25-5. And in the second half we just capitalized on our advantage, when Max Broughton (2W), Alex Lloyd (2B) and Ben Wharton (2B) all scored. So, after a slow start to the season, the Bs showed the proper standard of Hampton rugby and are going into are next game full of confidenceOllie Stokes  – 2W

The footballers have also been a busy bunch, with some boys playing on both Saturday and Monday.  Let’s hear about Saturday’s matches against Alleyn’s School:

The U13A match on Saturday vs Alleyn’s was to be the first match of a long weekend. However, we didn’t start to well as we went three nil down very early on. Luckily I managed to chip their goalkeeper 10 minutes before half time. But the goals kept coming for them as they scraped in two lucky goals before the half time whistle. Unhappy after this half of football, we clawed back to 5-3, as Ben Bird (2B) scored a well-timed glancing header and Alex Bush (2H) added to the scoresheet with a tap in at the back post. It was a very tightly contested second half but they managed to add two goals to their 5 to make the final score 7-3. Although it looks like a heavy defeat, we battled well and we deserved a better result. Everyone put in a great performance and we looked to build on the result on MondayBilly Hutchings2L

On Saturday the B team took to the pitch. They were looking to make improvements on their loss to Newland House the Monday beforehand. They started well, as Fergus MacEacharn (2W) scored a tidy goal, putting us 1-0 up.  However, two costly errors in the defence, both from corners, put Alleyn’s 1-2 up, undeservedly I must say. However, another goal from Arton Shalla (2H) put the scores level at 2-2. Then when James Kerr (2H) netted on the brink of half time, we had gone into the break 3-2 up and felt confident. Arton Shalla then scored another one; the win was guaranteed. The B team had successfully won another game and looked forward positively ahead of their match against Archbishop Tenison’s School.  Thomas de Gruchy – 2W

The A and B teams were back on the pitch on Monday to face Latymer and Archbishop Tenison’s respectively:

On Monday the 10th of October the U13 A’s round 2 cup match against Latymer kicked off.  We knew it was going to be a tough match so we had to play as a team and not as individuals. We got off to a promising start which led to us scoring two goals before the halftime whistle blew, both these goals coming from Alex Dinan (2L) including a spectacular volley from outside the penalty area.  The second half started with Alex Dinan completing his hat-trick. They then fought back to find themselves with a well-deserved goal, however Hampton soon responded with another two goals from Louis and Xander Wright (2W). The match stayed at lock until Latymer fought back once again to put themselves on the scoresheet. When there was only five minutes to go we scored another making the final score 6-2. We played well as a team and can improve on our mistakes in training.  Freddie Seddon –  2L

On Monday the U13B team played an away match at Archbishop Tenison’s School. Although we created some good chances and Arton Shala scored a great free kick, we eventually lost 5 – 1.

Luca Parrish – 2P

Monday also saw the U13 D, E and F teams take on Ibstock Place School.  It was a wonderful, goal-filled afternoon with victory for all three teams:

The U13 D team started well this season with a promising victory against Newland House but this week we were up against a strong opposition: Ibstock’s Cs. With only being a D team we were worried but excited at the same time. Before the match we were given an inspirational speech by Miss Smith which got the whole team buzzing. The whistle blew and the match started, we scored an early goal which gave us a crucial lead and encouraged us to score more. Before we knew it we had scored another and Ibstock were pushed back by our attack over and over again. When half time came around all of us were cheering and giving pats on the back but we knew it wasn’t the end. The whistle blew again and we were more determined than ever, scoring 3 more goals in the second half and we won 6-0. The highlight of the match in my opinion was the third goal: when were at the peak of the match. From Xandy (goalkeeper) out wide to Eduardo (left back) to Jamie (left wing) to Rohan (centre midfield) to Joe (right wing) to Jay (centre midfield) who played to ball through to Ethan (striker) to Joel (right forward) who passed across the goalkeeper to Sam (left forward) to score. It was the best goal we have ever scored!Sam Walker – 2P

On Monday the U13E played their second match on the year against Ibstock Place School. The game started well and we were 2-0 up before they scored however, we did manage to score again and the game ended 3-1Ollie Hartley – 2P

It was an exciting game for the U13F team against Ibstock. We were hoping for a win after a loss from our final game last year.  It was an 11 aside match, however we had an abundance of substitutes, so each person played about half of a match each. We scored two goals in quick succession from Rohi Popham in 2L (who also scored a hat trick.)  James Emery (2L) also scored.  By the end of the first half it was 4-0 to us. Other than that the goals were shared around.  In the second half, Ibstock fought hard, however by the end of the match, Hampton took victory 6-0.  We had a confident win and we hope to continue that form in future games.  Alex Mehta  – 2L  and Adithya Arvind –  2P

This week we end by congratulating our latest merit mile-stoners: Billy Hutchings, Tanveer Zafar, Abhi Sundaram, Rohan Vasudev, Alessandro Russell (10 merits) and Nayaaz Hashim (20 merits).  Great work! Don’t forget to see Mrs Owen in her office at Wednesday break-time to get your merits signed off!
