The nights may well be drawing in, but there has been no end of exciting activities and sporting fixtures that the First Year boys have been getting stuck in to.
To begin with, Mrs Peattie would like to congratulate this Joe Cole (1B) who has been named Tutee of the Week. This is because both his tutors and subject teachers have all been very impressed with his positive attitude, politeness and an outstanding effort that has been demonstrated in all aspects of school life. Well done Joe!
It’s been quite a week for trips, with both the History and Geography Departments taking the boys out for a day. The Geographers took the boys to the South Downs for a brisk tramp up the Fulking escarpment, followed by a walk along the ridge and a descent through Devil’s Dyke. They got the chance to practise their mapskills, learnt about the formation of the South Downs, and debated the future of an abandoned quarry.
The Historians were off to the East Sussex/Kent borderlands, where the first stop was Bodiam Castle. The boys were given an interesting tour of the castle, before attending a couple of workshops involving medieval weddings, feasts, armour and weaponry! A short coach ride took them to Battle, the site of Senlac Hill and the Battle of Hastings (nine hundred and fifty years ago), where the boys got the chance to walk in the footsteps of William and Harold.
Let’s find out what’s been happening on the sporting front this week, with reports from our Rugby and Football Captains:
Sam Brewster tells us: “Last Friday, Hampton U12A footballers played Kings College School. Playing impressively for the first few minutes our fluent style was rewarded by scoring with a great free kick from Ben Robinson. Soon after Joseph Treacy struck again in open play and we ended the half 2-0 up. In the second half we unfortunately lost our stride, conceding 2 goals. The game ended 2-2 despite Hampton being the dominant side. A big big thanks to Mr Sims and the other coaches for leading us to a promising start of the season”.
Meanwhile Adam Coombs reports for the B Team: “Last weekend Kings College came to Hampton challenging the B Team’s unbeaten streak. In the first half Hampton played well and had extended their lead as much as they could. In the second half they followed it on playing very well as a team and winning the match 8-1.”
The Rugby players were also in action. Captain of the A Team William Aust: “Yet another challenging game of rugby for the Hampton 12 A’s. This time, providing the tough competition was RGS High Wycombe. Despite a good team effort, we were soundly beaten, and to add to the frustration we were also caught in an enormous downpour of rain. I am sure we will be giving it our all in training this week”.
Ollie Tynan rounds up our sports reporting for the U12 B Team: “RGS High Wycombe are an all rugby school thus they were very strong side for Hampton, however we played extremely good rugby and the score was 35-0 going into the second half. We then played the best we had in the whole season scoring two tries and ending up with a final score of 40-10.”
Many thanks to all the boys involved, particularly given the conditions last Saturday. I too was caught up in a massive hail and rainstorm with the J15 Rowing Team (A sport that I hope some of the boys will be ‘giving a go’ in Third Year!) – in nearly twenty years in the sport I have never had such a wet day!
On a slightly different note, Mr Rowntree and Mrs Peattie had the pleasure of watching Johnny Evans-Hutchinson star in the West-End show the Go-Between on Saturday afternoon. Johnny shared the stage for the entire performance with Michael Crawford and did an absolutely outstanding job, so much so that he received a standing ovation. Well done Johnny!
All that remains is to say that I know that all of us on the First Year team are looking forward to welcoming you to school next week for Pastoral Forum. A reminder that Mrs Peattie’s lectures will be at 7 and 8pm and run for half an hour. Those of you that booked a slot to see your son’s Form Tutor should be informed of your designated slot very shortly by Mrs Peattie.
I hope you all enjoy a pleasant weekend.
Mr T. Hill
