Summer has come to Hampton this week, and we are all enjoying the upturn in weather. Lunchtimes can be spent relaxing on the fields, basking in the early May sunshine, lulled into a state of soporific contentment by the buzzing of bees. And not just any bees. Hampton’s own bee hives, newly installed and manned by our Bee Keeping Club. Led by the intrepid and honey-loving Dr Ward, a legion of apiarists have signed up to learn the rudiments of bee-husbandry. I am delighted to hear that a large number of First Years stuck their hands up – appropriately swaddled in protective clothing, of course – to volunteer for the initiative. Well done to Jack East, Oliver Pulfrey Baker, George Sanders, Luke Jansen, Raul Setharajan, Milo Heard, Thomas Norman, Quentin Duff, Rishi Patel and Roman Feron Clark for taking on this new and fascinating challenge. I look forward with interest to hearing how the project progresses.
On Wednesday our swimmers competed in the Richmond Borough Championships with great success, winning the overall title. Congratulations to the whole team: Chris Hardy, Ben Francis, Ben Freer, Thomas Ketel, Alex Lloyd, Sam Davidson, Alessandro Russell, Cameron Slade and Liam Weaver. There was also individual success for Chris, Ben Francis, Sam and Thomas, and for Chris, Ben Freer, Thomas, Sam and Alessandro in the medley and freestyle relays. I await the inter-Form Swimming Gala in June with excitement – it promises to be a keenly contested event.
The cricketers enjoyed three excellent wins against Dulwich College. Huw Harris led the way for the U12A team with 44, ably assisted by Arjun Bhat (30) and Max Leman (28), as we posted 152-6. A controlled bowling performance, with two wickets for Thomas de Gruchy, restricted Dulwich to 116-8. Three wickets for Ben Wharton was the highlight of the U12Bs bowling performance, as Dulwich scored 98-3, and an impressive 39 not out from Luke Bland saw us get the required runs with seven wickets in hand. And our top scorer for the weekend was Ethan Knight, who hit 48 for the U12C team. Also in the runs was Luke Michels (24), as we posted 142-5. Two wickets from Luca Parrish saw the opposition fall 36 runs short.
We had some great news of individual sporting success this week, with Joshua Ross being selected to sail for Richmond Borough in the London Youth Games in June. Well done, Joshua – we wish you the best of luck and look forward to hearing of your exploits on the water.
It has been, it must be admitted, a quiet week on the merit front – doubtless the attractions of sunshine and bee hives are too great to pass up. Nonetheless, very well done to Theo Wedge (20 merits), Ben Wix (30 merits), and Sohan Sodhi (60 merits).
