Hampton School has an established link with Malawi.

Several years ago two Hampton teachers travelled to Senga Bay on the west coast of Lake Malawi and met Sam Luddick a villager who was doing all she could to help orphaned and abused children in the local community. This was the foundation of the ongoing link between Hampton School and Senga Bay.

In 2008, Hampton School raised funds to build the ‘Hampton Safe Haven’ in the village of Cool Runnings in the Senga Bay area which offers children a safe place to go and teaches them essential life skills.

Pupils and staff from Hampton School regularly travel to the Malawi to visit the Safe Haven and help with teaching the children and with all the practical tasks such as building, painting, clearing ground, building fences, repairing playground equipment and collecting water. In recent years, through the support of Hampton School Form Charity and Adventure Society, the Safe Haven has been transformed and now offers classrooms for children from 4 – 11 years. The Safe Haven has now been recognised by the Malawi Government as an approved primary school.

Senior Hamptonians are also able to visit Malawi as part of an biennial Adventure Society trip. The purpose is to introduce the pupils to a variety of cultures and enable them to put their skills to use in helping the local communities. They also enjoy a wide range of fun and challenging activities.

The School offers a number of annual travel awards from a fund set up in memory of Mr E.R. Badman, a former Deputy Headmaster of the School and a legacy from Mr A.T. Shepherd, an old boy and former Chairman of Governors. The awards are intended to enable boys to travel, in this country or abroad, for educational purposes, in pursuit of some interest, or for adventure.

Awards in the recent past have ranged from £20 to £300 per individual and decisions regarding awards are made based upon the quality of a pupil’s application and following an interview.

Those who receive awards must submit a full report of the activity, to be retained by the School Library. Although preference will normally be given to enterprises conceived and planned by the individual(s) concerned, consideration may also be given to applications for financial help towards the cost of those organised by other bodies.
