There has probably never been a more relevant time to study the Chinese Language. In recent years China has undergone a transformation from a developing economy into a major industrial superpower and its global influence continues to grow.
Hampton offers an exciting and fun learning environment in which students enjoy the challenge of this fascinating language.
We offer all boys a taster course which gives them an introduction to Chinese culture as well as language, and many boys opt to study Chinese to GCSE/IGCSE level and beyond. We are delighted that the results of boys taking GCSE and an A Level equivalent qualification are consistently excellent.
Co-Curricular
The Department arranges a study visit to China, which is designed to encourage pupils to learn Chinese and to increase their personal experience and understanding about aspects of Chinese culture throughout the two-week study visit.
We also run a lunchtime club during the summer term, packed with games, music, cultural input, film clips and other interesting activities, aiming to help pupils who have not taken Mandarin to learn about the background to Chinese Mandarin and to practise their language skills.
Hampton pupils participate in the national Speaking competition, the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators and a nationwide Calligraphy competition, which has raised the motivation and interest for learning the language, as well as improving their creative writing skills.
