Fourth Year Hamptonians recently enjoyed a highly successful language and cultural immersion trip to Ronda, continuing a long‑standing Hampton tradition. This year marked the thirty‑fifth time the School has taken pupils to the beautiful Andalusian town, a relationship which has flourished over the decades and provided more than 1,400 Hampton pupils with unforgettable linguistic and cultural experiences.
During the trip, Hamptonians attended lessons alongside Spanish pupils at local partner schools, including the Instituto Martín Rivero. These sessions focused primarily on conversational Spanish in small groups, giving everyone the chance to apply their language skills in authentic, real‑life situations. Working together with their Spanish counterparts, the young linguists developed their oral fluency, listening skills and confidence — progress that is particularly valuable ahead of the summer exam period.
Beyond the classroom, pupils immersed themselves in Spanish life. Afternoons and evenings provided plenty of opportunities to socialise with local pupils, explore the town and surrounding area, as well as the opportunity to enjoy plenty of football. Free time was spent discovering Ronda’s historic streets, relaxing in the sunshine and sampling regional cuisine in local restaurants, where pupils enthusiastically tried a range of traditional Andalusian dishes.
The trip also included a number of cultural visits, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding of Spanish history and heritage. Highlights included trips to the Arab Baths, the Mondragón Palace and the impressive church of Santa María la Mayor, as well as a visit to the theatre to see a musical production inspired by the life and works of the poet Antonio Machado.
At the weekend, pupils swapped classrooms for the great outdoors, exchanging pens for hiking boots on a scenic walk through the surrounding countryside. Further activities included a guided visit to Spain’s oldest bullring and a lively scavenger hunt around the town. A visit to Seville provided another memorable highlight, with pupils exploring the city’s historic centre and ascending the iconic Giralda bell tower for panoramic views across the rooftops and narrow streets below.
Throughout the trip, the Hamptonians embraced every opportunity to speak Spanish, make new friends and experience life beyond the classroom. Combining language learning, cultural discovery and plenty of fun, the Ronda trip once again proved to be a hugely rewarding experience and a highlight of the Modern Languages programme at Hampton School.
