Hampton School’s annual Jazz Café returned with style, filling the Main Hall with vibrant music, relaxed café‑style atmosphere and outstanding performances from Hamptonians across the year group.

Guests were treated to performances from the Swing Band, Junior Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band and the Jazz Quartet, each bringing its own distinctive sound and musical personality. The atmosphere buzzed with energy as the musicians showcased confident improvisation, polished ensemble playing and expressive solos across a wide range of jazz styles.

The Swing Band opened the evening with a set featuring several superb soloists and vocalists. Fifth Year Aarav delivered a stylish rendition of Sway, while Lower Sixth musician Daniel  impressed with a charismatic performance of Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. Upper Sixth Hamptonian Aaryan added further colour to the programme with a beautifully shaped tenor saxophone solo in A Song for You. The set concluded with an exciting performance of Snarky Puppy’s Shofukan, featuring dynamic solos from Fifth Year pupils Oliver on drums and Harry on trombone.

Junior Jazz brought fantastic energy to the stage with vibrant performances of Moanin’ and the theme from Spider‑Man. Nearly every member took a solo — an impressive feat, particularly as many were performing in their first ever Jazz Café.

Jazz Band continued the momentum with a lively set including two vocal numbers from Lower Sixth vocalist Hayden, whose rendition of Stevie Wonder’s Sir Duke was a particular highlight. Their closing number, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, saw the whole band singing, creating a joyful and memorable moment. The ensemble also featured a standout solo from Fifth Year Oliver, who delivered an exceptional performance of Cissy Strut.

From dynamic big‑band arrangements to intimate small‑group numbers, the evening celebrated the creativity, commitment and growing musicianship of Hampton’s young jazz performers. The Jazz Café once again proved to be one of the highlights of the School’s musical calendar — a warm, uplifting evening that captured the spirit of collaboration, confidence and fun that makes Jazz at Hampton so special.
