A group of seven Lower Sixth Hamptonians travelled to Hamburg in Germany for a week long ‘work and study’ trip.

Mornings were dedicated to intensive language lessons at the Colón Language Centre, which provided pupils with a valuable opportunity to focus on their spoken German. Afternoons were spent gaining hands-on experience in various local businesses, including cafes, hotels, a charity clothes distribution centre, and a kindergarten. These placements provided invaluable insights into the daily workings of German society and allowed Hamptonians to practise their language skills in real-world settings.

On the first day of their trip, the Sixth Formers had an opportunity to explore the city, which allowed everyone to get their bearings before a busy week of work and study. The linguists enjoyed a fascinating tour of the FC St Pauli football stadium, where they learnt about the history of the club. Evenings were filled with engaging activities such as a Hamburg-themed quiz, a visit to the fun fair, an awe-inspiring trip to Miniatur Wunderland – home to the world’s largest model railway – and an exciting escape room challenge completed entirely in German. The trip not only enhanced the linguists language proficiency but also broadened their cultural horizons, making it a memorable and educational experience for all involved.
