Hampton’s young debaters added to their haul of awards at this year’s LEH Model United Nation (MUN) conference, as 17 delegates and four chairs had a very enjoyable and successful weekend of debating at neighbouring school LEH.
Seventeen Hamptonians represented the delegations of Israel, Australia, Russia and Yemen, with seven pupils making up joint delegations (China, Mozambique, India, Saudi Arabia and Ukraine) with LEH. The theme of the conference was Global Equality and the Empowerment of Women and the committee agendas ranged from women’s reproductive rights to protecting women against violence in conflict zones.
On the final day of the conference, the General Assembly included debate on a fictional crisis, precipitated by President Trump’s withdrawal from NATO resulting in a fresh wave of aggression from Putin. The Hampton School delegates were outstanding over the course of the weekend. The quality of debate was very high, and it was evident that Hamptonians were very much ‘in character’ and trying to communicate the position of their nation. The Hampton Chairs (Sixth Formers Sam G, Gabriel K, Noah K and Isaac C) thoroughly enjoyed overseeing debate and bringing their years of MUN experience to committee command and control. It was also fantastic to see First and Second Year pupils participating in their first proper conference, having enjoyed themselves at the ISSP MUN Day hosted by LEH during the autumn term.
All the Hamptonians were superb ambassadors for their respective countries, and several of our delegates picked up awards at the conference including:
Outstanding Delegate
Digby J (Russia) – Outstanding delegate on the Security Council
Monty S (Israel) – Outstanding delegate on the Economic & Social committee
Felix R (India) – Outstanding delegate on the Political Committee
Highly Commended
Thomas D (Russia) – Highly commended in the Human Rights committee
Philip V (Ukraine) – Highly commended in the Economic & Social committee
Xavier F (Mozambique) – Highly commended on the Economic & Social Committee
Hamptonians also scooped the ‘best delegation’ award for the Russian team, an outstanding achievement.
