Hampton’s Music Department challenged musicians from across the year groups to tap into their musical prowess and compose an original piece of music.
Hamptonians were tasked with composing a three-minute piece of music inspired by a female historical figure. The piece had to be composed for either the Chamber Orchestra or Consort of Voices choir, and the musical score submitted had to include relevant parts for the ensemble.
The competition was judged by Mr Ashe (Composer-in-Residence at LEH), who was impressed with the outstanding level of musicianship shown in all the entries, and had an exceptionally difficult decision to make in deciding this year’s winners.
Winner:
Theo T – Radiance
Second Place:
Yangzi T – A Re-Imagining of Mipha’s Theme
Third Place:
Alexander L – Queen of the Nile
Highly Commended:
Samrath S – Sophia Duleep Singh
David T – Dragon Lady of the South China Sea
Theo’s winning entry Radiance will be performed by their chosen ensemble at the Spring Concert later this term.
Organiser of the competition, Mr James Ferrier, congratulated everyone who entered for producing some superb pieces of music:
The level of musicianship in this year’s Composition Competition was truly outstanding, with all the entries showcasing musical talent and maturity. Shortlisted candidates received feedback from Mr Ashe, Composer-in-Residence at neighbouring LEH, who praised Hampton’s musicians for their hard work and originality. Our winner was Theo, and his piece ‘Radiance’ (inspired by Marie Curie), is already being rehearsed by Consort of Voices ready to be premiered at this year’s Spring Concert!
