Hampton Russianists from Third and Fourth Year enjoyed a workshop exploring the Russia of ordinary people through folk arts, colour, shapes and symbols.

Pupils saw an exhibition of handmade clay toys, sculptures and whistles from the best artists in the field from different regions of Russia. The exhibition demonstrates the diversity of this craft and its expressiveness.

Dr Oksana Sekatcheva (PhD) talked to the boys about the history of clay toys, their unusual shapes and silhouettes, cheerful colours, symbolic patterns, meanings and functions.

The highlight of the workshop saw Hamptonians turning their hands to clay modelling and hand-painting their own whistle in the authentic Russian style of Filimonovo.
