Lower Sixth pupil Leo Luczkiw has been awarded a much sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, one of the most esteemed scholarship schemes in the UK.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships support young people from across the UK who have the potential to be future leaders in engineering. This academic year saw a record number of applications, with over 1,500 pupils applying for the prestigious award. Scholars are chosen following a tough selection process including an application, which involves a practical engineering or technology project, and a two-hour aptitude exam. The top-scoring applicants then go forward to an online interview, a central part of which is discussion about their practical project.

Leo was delighted to be awarded a full scholarship for the duration of his Sixth Form studies, which opens up a range of enrichment opportunities. Leo received his award at Bletchley Park where he met other scholars from across the country. Successful pupils receive a financial award to spend on STEM-related activities and have access to a range of opportunities to learn more about engineering. They are assigned a mentor, who is on hand to provide advice and guidance about future study and career development. The Scholars are also sponsored by a commercial company, and Leo is receiving support from The Marley Trust. They also industry-based experience days, which this year includes the RAF, McLaren and Virgin Atlantic. Leo hopes to study aerospace engineering at university, with a focus on sustainability.
