Hampton’s young debaters impressed at the first Model United Nations (MUN) conference of the academic year. A team of 15 delegates took part in the conference, held at Reigate Grammar School, representing the delegations of Jordan, Mozambique and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

There were several interesting and topical issues under debate, and the Hampton MUN team showcased excellent debating skills as they discussed topics including the threat of Artificial Intelligence on businesses and the ongoing debate over the deportation of immigrants to third-party countries. Upper Sixth Hamptonian Sam Govier took on the daunting role of helping to chair the Security Council as Deputy President. Sam rose to the challenge magnificently and thoroughly enjoyed the experience – his favourite in five years of attending REIMUN conferences.

All the Hamptonians were superb ambassadors for their respective countries, and three of our delegates picked up awards:

Social & Humanitarian Committee
Highly Commended – Digby Joyce (Mozambique)

Diarmament & Security Committee
Highly Commended – Leander Koutsoudis-Bhuller (DPRK)

Economic & Financial Committee
Best delegate – Xavier Fricot (Mozambique)

Miss Jenny Field, one of the co-ordinators of MUN at Hampton, was delighted with the pupil’s performance at the first fixture of the MUN season:

I was particularly impressed with the oracy skills that were on display from Hamptonians at this year’s Reigate Grammar School MUN. They delivered their speeches and points of information with real expression, character and tonality – they were interesting and engaging to listen to!
