Hampton School’s exceptional male-voice choir, Voices of Lions, made a triumphant return to the Edinburgh Fringe, performing to record audiences at the world’s largest performing arts festival.

The 45-stong choir, featuring Hamptonians from Third Year to Upper Sixth alongside recent leavers, took to the stage at Old St Paul’s Church for their eleventh appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe. The choir’s diverse repertoire ranged from Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns to an energetic performance of I Get Around by The Beach Boys. Audiences praised the choir’s ability to effortlessly move between classical songs, spiritual pieces and upbeat contemporary numbers, a signature of Voices of Lions.

The five shows were marked by many memorable moments, including a heartfelt rendition of jazz classic Misty, arranged by Upper Sixth musician Sam Moshi and featuring an outstanding solo by Hugo Knowles. The choir’s stunning rendition of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody wowed the audience, as the young singers pulled off the complex arrangement with aplomb. Uplifting numbers like Friend Like Me from Aladdin and a spirited version of Drunken Sailor were enhanced by clever choreography, showcasing the choir’s talent and energy. This impressive combination of vocal skill and showmanship made their performances at the Fringe unforgettable.

In true Fringe spirit, the Hamptonians spent their mornings promoting the show on the Royal Mile, handing out distinctive black and yellow flyers. Their efforts paid off, as the final performance drew a record audience of over 250 attendees.

Theatre Weekly gave Voices of Lions a fantastic five-star review after their wonderful run at the Edinburgh Fringe:

Voices of Lions is performed by BOYS! I’ve been amazed by (university) student choirs and a cappella groups over the years, but this lot aren’t even old enough to have quite decided on the right hairstyles to suit their growing stature yet (sorry, but as the mum of boys, it has to be said). But boy can they sing!

It seems to just get better and better! Once again, Voices of Lions broke their audience record at the Edinburgh fringe, achieving 250 for the final show. Their positivity, enthusiasm and team spirit was infectious!

It is always a pleasure running this trip, but there was something really special about this group of pupils – certainly a week I won’t forget in a hurry. Well done to all of you, and a huge thank you to my incredible colleagues for giving up precious time to support this trip.
