Hampton School kicked off the 2024 Sevens season hosting the 27th Founders’ Day tournament, welcoming top rugby players from schools across the country, including Millfield School, Epsom College and Ipswich School. The Hampton School Founders’ Day Sevens is always an early indicator of teams to watch out for in the upcoming season, and this year was no exception.

The event involved ten teams in an incredibly strong field, with Cranleigh School looking to make it a hat-trick of victories. The ten teams were divided into two groups of five teams each, with the group winners progressing straight to the Cup final, and the Plate guaranteed to be a high quality final, featuring the two group runners up. Hampton were drawn in Group 1 as hosts, alongside Hurstpierpoint College, John Fisher, St John’s Leatherhead, and Millfield School, a challenging group for all. Group 2 also promised high quality matches, featuring the 2023 champions, Cranleigh, alongside Gordon’s, Ipswich, St Benedict’s, and the Plate champions Epsom College.

After some fiercely competitive group matches, the Cup final was contested by Cranleigh and Milffield in a close, high quality game, with Cranleigh School retaining the cup for a third successive year with a 19-12 scoreline. Hampton finished the tournament on a high, winning the Plate final against Epsom College, after their opponents equalised to force extra time and Hampton scored a golden try to win the game 22-17.
