Sixth Form Hamptonian Kieran Bouwmeester-Reid has enjoyed a remarkable few years on the athletics circuit culminating in a first place in the recent U20 Kent Combined Events Championships, his first Senior Decathlon competition.

The event involves two days of gruelling competition, with day one comprising the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m, concluding on day two when the athletes compete in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and finishing with a tough 1500m race. Kieran’s phenomenal performance resulted in a points tally of 6227, which puts him fourth in the U20 category in the UK and first for his age, cementing his reputation as one of the finest young decathletes in the country.

Earlier in the summer Kieran also achieved national selection for the shot put in the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships, and in 2022 won a team Silver medal representing Middlesex at the English Schools’ Athletic Association (ESAA) Combined Events Championships Athletics Finals. This is a major sporting event and great recognition of his potential as a senior athlete. Kieran is now looking forward to a strong winter training season, when his focus will be on speed and endurance. The Hamptonian will compete in the England Athletics Senior & U20 Combined Event Championships in early 2024, where he hopes to medal, with his ultimate goal being to compete in the European Athletics U20 Championships which takes place in Finland in 2025. Kieran is also focusing on the final year of his A Levels and hopes to receive a athletics scholarship to enable him to study at a top university in the USA.

Director of Sport, Mr Carlos Mills, congratulated Kieran on his fantastic performance:

What Kieran has achieved is a measure of his determination and hard work over many years, alongside passion, and talent. To compete at such a high level over two days in ten different events is the ultimate for an athlete. What a fantastic start to his Senior year of Decathlon, Kieran should feel very proud of his accomplishment and I’m sure he will use it as springboard for even greater achievements. We are all very excited about his future exploits.
