Family, fellow pupils and staff gathered to celebrate our Upper Sixth leavers’ contribution to the musical life of the School in a superb concert in the Hammond Theatre.

Hampton’s senior musicians showcased their talents with a wonderful variety of performances, which highlighted the outstanding level of musicianship at the School. From Grieg to Gershwin and Brahms to The Beatles, Upper Sixth musicians entertained the audience with an eclectic programme which included barbershop, rock songs, original compositions and a range of accomplished instrumentalists. Among the many highlights was a duet from Seb Evans and Lower Sixth singer Milo Band, ably accompanied by Tomas Escobar, who expertly performed the aria Au Fond du Temple Saint from Bizet’s opera The Pearl Fishers. Pianist Ollie Lycett’s original composition Bound to Dare wowed the Hammond Theatre audience, along with a series of superb solo performances. The first half ended with an uplifting rendition from the Upper Sixth Barbershop of Ben E. King’s soul classic Stand By Me.

The second half continued the fine musical performances from our senior musicians including the Upper Sixth Rock Band’s toe-tapping performance of Closing Time by Semisonic, as well as flautist Theo Mantel-Cooper who mastered Chopin’s Variations on a Theme by Rossini with aplomb. Pianist Viduna Diyasena took the audience on a whistle-stop tour of the music from the film La La Land, while Johnny Evans-Hutchinson and Tetsuro Kato brought the evening to a close with an accomplished rendition of The Beatles’ classic The Long and Winding Road, bringing the appreciative Hammond Theatre to their feet.

Director of Music, Mr Daniel Roland, thanked the Class of 2023 for their superb musical performances during their time at Hampton:

Once again, I was absolutely blown away by the talent at this year’s Leavers’ Concert. 23 absolutely stunning performances from a group of Hamptonians that will certainly be missed by all of us in the Music Department. Thank you, Upper Sixth musicians, for your dedication and commitment to all things musical!
