Hampton is delighted to announce our first Talk! of the academic year, The Pandemic – Lessons Learned, presented by Dr Felix Chua and Dr Andrew Makin.

In the worst pandemic this century, over 23 million people in the UK contracted Covid-19 and 205,000 people have lost their lives to date. The country is still counting the cost of the coronavirus outbreak across every walk of life and there are serious concerns that, following Alpha and Omicron, other variants of the disease may emerge.

As the UK went into lockdown in March 2020, the medical profession was catapulted into overdrive. At the peak of the first wave of infection, hospital doctors were dealing with over 8,000 deaths a week. Meanwhile, in laboratories across the country, research and development scientists worked tirelessly to establish which drugs could best treat Covid, and ultimately to create a vaccine that could prevent it.

We are delighted to bring together representatives from both sides of the medical profession to share their experiences of treating the coronavirus disease, the search for a cure, and to discuss what the future might hold for Covid-19 and other pandemics.

Dr Felix Chua

Consultant Respiratory Physician: The Royal Brompton Hospital and National Heart & Lung Institute

Dr Chua was one of the frontline NHS responders tackling the global Covid-19 pandemic and saw the full impact of this devastating disease on hundreds of patients. From the outset, Dr Chua and his team began urgently searching for the best treatments for those with Covid and were delighted to eventually see the death toll fall as medicines began to work.

Dr Andrew Makin

Senior Pharmaceutical Physician

Dr Andrew Makin has spent over 20 years in the research and development of medicines. During the two years at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, the pharmaceutical industry faced unprecedented pressure to find drug treatments and vaccines that would stop the death toll rising. Dr Makin will offer an insight into this unprecedented accelerated period of medical research and development, and offer a specialist view of what role vaccines and drugs will continue to play in tackling Covid-19 and future pandemics.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear two experts talk about their experience of the pandemic.
