Welcome to the First Year Blog!

The First Year have not allowed the colder weather to dampen their spirits, and have been dashing around the 3G and sports pitches at every opportunity! There has been plenty of sports fixtures to keep the boys on their toes, with our Interform Cross Country winners representing the School at Richmond Schools Cross Country on Wednesday. This week is also national Anti-bullying week, and the boys watched an inspirational video during Assembly on Monday, centred around this year’s ‘One Kind Word’ campaign, to act with kindness towards each other. Hamptonians from across the Year Groups have been reminiding us all how how a moment of kindness can help change someone’s day for the better.

This weekend sees the first Adventure Society trip of the year for the First Year boys, with several boys travelling to Bentley Copse for a mountain biking and board games trip. Have fun, boys!

CLUB OF THE WEEK

This week, Arshan N (1J) tells us about Theatre Tech Club:

In this club you get to explore the world of theatres; from moving and making props for upcoming shows to learning how to operate professional sound and lighting equipment, managing the stage and much more! It runs every day from the start of lunch to the end so you can come any day whatever time you want!

If you want to join just come along to the Hammond Theatre, some days there isn’t that much to do but some days we have a lot of things to do! The club is open to anyone from First Year to Upper Sixth. Recently we are preparing for the upcoming Christmas show, A Midwinter’s Nightmare. When you first join you get a very fun tour of the whole theatre and you meet some of the other theatre tech club members, you will usually shadow for your first show so you get the hang of it but after that you get to be really involved so you can have a taste at what is coming. I hope I see you there at the club!

Richmond Cross Country

A team of six intrepid First Year cross country runners made their way to Richmond Park on Thursday for the annual Richmond Schools Cross Country race. Ben P (1H) tells us all about it:

The race was held in Richmond Park and was a 2km one lap race, It was tricky terrain to run on and sometimes quite difficult to grip but with lots of parents cheering you on, it was an exciting race and the First Year team put in a great performance.

On your marks, get set, go! Here’s a glimpse of the boys at the start of their race as they set off on their 2km run:

Well done boys!

ENVIRONMENTAL SUPERSTAR

Last week, Theo L (1B) was invited to attend two events at COP26. As a result of his excellent work promoting environmental causes through his video channel, Theo was invited to a videography masterclass with Oscar winner Pippa Ehrich; Theo was the youngest person to be invited to this class, so this is a particularly significant achievement. Later in the week, Theo also had the chance to attend COP26 in person, to join the Sustainable Innovation Forum, and take part in a video production event.

We are so proud of Theo for his achievements; from what he says below, it sounds like he had a fantastic time. Well done, Theo!

It was really fascinating to learn all about the innovative solutions to climate change. To just be at COP26 was an experience of a lifetime and it was really exciting to see behind the scenes of an event that has featured in the news all over the world.

Find out more about Theo’s experience here

Tutee of the Week

Each week, Tutors in the First Year team nominate a boy who they have been particularly impressed with and Mr Hill and Mrs Halford will provide the boy with a football to use on the 3G for the week!

This week’s Tutee of the Week is Alex L (1J). Alex has really impressed us with his maturity and enthusiasm, and he has qualified for the U12 London Major Chess championship this week. Well done, Alex!

Hampton Pledge

Mr Saul told us more about COP26 in this week’s assembly and reminded us all that small changes to our lifestyle can make a big difference in the fight against climate change.

The hope is that everyone at Hampton will make an environmental pledge that will be made into a mosaic and displayed in School. The poster below gives you a few ideas.

You can also take a look at some of the pledges that have already been made by the Hampton community:

Here is the link to the pledge form, so get your thinking caps on this weekend and take a moment to make your pledge. The deadline for pledges has been extended until Monday.

Special Shoutouts

We love to hear about what you have been getting up to outside of school. Please do send any information about any of your achievements through to Mrs Ziegler (h.ziegler@hamptonschool.org.uk).
