Hamptonians across the year groups enjoyed success at the Harrow School Athletics competition. Congratulations to Upper Sixth Former, Edward Buckle who equalled the senior school record in the High Jump after clearing 1.80m. Hayden Christian (Fourth Year) broke the Hampton School Long Jump record with his jump of 6.51m, and First Year Marcus Solomon broke a 32-year-old school record in the 1500m.
This was twelve-year-old Marcus’ first appearance representing Hampton and he completed the race in an impressive 4 minutes, 41.92 seconds.
The previous record of 4min 48.7sec was set by Gareth Creagh in 1989. Gareth, who competed nationally as a schoolboy athlete, went on to become a teacher at Hampton School and is now Head of German at Highgate School. He says he is delighted for Marcus:
I would like to warmly congratulate Marcus on breaking my First Year 1500m record of 4:48. I still remember vividly the summer afternoon in 1989 when I ran the time on the School’s 300m grass track with Mr Clarke (yes, the same one) on stopwatch duties. It was with great pride that I saw the record still stood when I returned to Hampton to teach in 2001. Marcus will no doubt have the 4:14 mark (set two years later at the English Schools’ Championships where I won Bronze in the junior boys race) firmly in his sights. I wish him and other Hamptonian athletes the very best of luck with their training and racing!
