Hampton School’s Fifth Year boys have plenty to celebrate after achieving superb GCSE results, including a remarkable 1,481 9-8 (A*) grades.

Highlights of the day

  • 72% of all grades at 9-8 (A*)
  • 91% of all results at 9-7 (A*- A), compared with a national figure of 21.9% (18.6% for boys)
  • 50 boys achieve a clean sweep of 10 or more I/GCSEs at the top grades, 9-8 (A*)
  • 48% grade 9s in the reformed GCSE examinations

These excellent results confirm Hampton’s place among the highest achieving academic schools in the country.  Well over half the Year Group received all 9-7 (A*/A) grades and 14 Hamptonians chalked up 12 or 11 top grades. In those subjects using the 9-1 scale, an outstanding 48% of all grades achieved were grade 9s.

Individual success stories abounded as boys collected their results.  Young reporters Josh Bartholomew, Ross Hyde and Nathan Chapplow all achieved top 9-7 (A*-A)  grades. Nathan achieved a clean sweep of 12 top grades as did young debater, Egor Kaygorodov.

Star Chemist Matthew Cresswell secured a clean sweep of 9/A* grades after achieving a Gold award in the exacting Cambridge Chemistry Challenge (usually taken only by Sixth Formers) earlier in the year. Hampton’s sportsmen also excelled. Rugby Academy players Jamie Benson (Harlequins) and Jesper Hartikainen (London Irish) were two of several oval ball teammates scoring top grades. Sami Omaar, a member of Hampton’s English Schools’ FA Cup-winning football team in April, collected excellent results while fellow footballers Oliver Burke, Maxi Grindley and Robbie Cox all achieved a clean sweep of the very top grades. Hampton rowers are also celebrating today after learning of their excellent grades.

Departmental highlights

  • 100% of grades in Russian, Greek and Mandarin at the top 9-8 (A*) grade
  • 100% of grades in Music at 9-7 (A*-A)
  • 99% of all Maths grades were 9-7 (A*-A); 126 grade 9s

  • 113 grade 9s for Hampton Chemists

Headmaster, Kevin Knibbs, congratulated the boys, praising them for combining academic excellence with equivalent success in sport, the Arts and other co-curricular activities. He paid particular tribute to the backing the boys had received from their teachers and parents along the way:

Our boys deserve the warmest praise for achieving these superb GCSE results.  It is wonderful to see the hard work of our pupils and their dedicated teachers rewarded with such impressive academic success, which once again places Hampton among a very select number of schools in the country.

We are especially delighted that our Fifth Years have combined performing so well in their GCSE examinations with making the most of the co-curricular opportunities on offer here and generously encouraging one another in true Hamptonian fashion.  Retaining this camaraderie and their healthy, well balanced approach to School life will help them flourish in the Sixth Form and they have really strong foundations for future A Level/Pre-U success.  Many congratulations, thank your parents for their love and support, and enjoy your well-deserved celebrations, boys!
