Our German linguists reached the final of the Goethe-Institut German Debating Final, which was held at the British Council in London.

After a tense semi-final against Colchester Royal Grammar School, the boys progressed to the national final against Dr Challoner’s Grammar School. The team made up of Lower Sixth pupils Noah Langford, Tom Settle, Agastya Jha and team captain, Jake Emerson impressed the judges in a closely fought contest as they debated whether Europe should be included as a subject on the curriculum. The boys delivered thorough and eloquent arguments and narrowly missed out on winning the competition.

Johannes Ebert, Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut, praised the Hamptonians for their performance:

I was very impressed by the students’ skills in the German language and also by their ability to listen and exchange well-thought-out arguments on the European topic of the debate. This gives hope for our common European future – whatever may happen in the next weeks.
