It’s been a busy week for our rugby teams as the Middlesex Cup reached its conclusion. Josh Bartholomew reports on the final matches:
Four Hampton teams reached the finals of their respective Middlesex Cup competitions at Allianz Park, home of Saracens RFC.
The first team to make the trip to North London was the U14s, who faced a strong Harrow School side in the final. Despite having beaten University College School and Gunnersbury Catholic School on their way to Allianz Park, Harrow proved a step too far for the plucky U14s, who lost 33-7.
Wednesday saw two Hampton sides in action, with the U16s coming up against Merchant Taylors’ School. The side made up for their defeat to Whitgift School at the same venue in the National Cup semi-final last season, winning 27-12 to win the Middlesex Cup. It is the second consecutive year that this group of players have been victorious in their Middlesex Cup final and the fifth year running that Hampton has retained the U16 Middlesex Cup, a fantastic achievement!
The U18 team, comprised of players in their last year of school rugby, made sure their final game as a year group was a successful one, beating London Oratory School 52-12.
Finally, the U15s travelled to Allianz Park for their showdown. Unfortunately, they came out on the wrong side of a 18-15 score-line against Gunnersbury Catholic School.
Captain of the U18 team, Nick Bitzakidis, was delighted with the performance of his Upper Sixth team-mates:
It was a great opportunity to round off a successful rugby career as a year group and a memory we will hold dear forever.
