Lower Sixth Former Koby Kalavannan has enjoyed a phenomenal few months on the chess circuit.

Koby was named U18 British Chess Champion after an impressive run of games at the annual national championships held in Hull. His performance secured his current ranking as the No 1 U18 chess player in the UK.

In August, Koby was also selected to represent England in the U16 European Chess Championships where he performed well and was delighted to hear from his parents that he had achieved ten A* grades in his I/GCSE examinations.

To top off a wonderful summer, Koby also learned that he has gained his FIDE Master (FM) Chess title, the first step on the road of becoming a chess Grandmaster.

Speaking about his success, Koby said:

I’m delighted that having worked so hard on chess over the past couple of years I have been officially recognised as a FIDE Master and my efforts have paid off. I’m especially grateful for all the support from my family and the School for making this possible and it gives me confidence in working towards achieving my ultimate dream of becoming a chess Grandmaster in the future.
