Last week we heard about Hampton’s Arabic and Junior Debating clubs. Today James tells us about the benefits of bridge:
Wanting to learn a new card game and get to know people? Give bridge club a try! It’s every Wednesday on the atrium ground floor from 1:00pm. Even though some people may not think the club is for them, it is actually a lot more than just cards with a lot of strategy involved and partner work as you play as two pairs against each other. Joining a lunchtime club allows you to discover new passions, improve your skills and make new friends. There may even be the chance to speak to the whole school at Assembly. Ben Francis explains what it was like to bee up on stage:
On Monday, (Ben Francis), Oliver Pulfrey Baker (2L), Luke Jansen (2L) and Jack East (2L) and I participated in a full school assembly lecture in full beekeeping suit for beekeeping club! Jack spoke about the club’s origins, Luke spoke about what we do and Ollie spoke about our aims. I changed the slides to the relevant slides. Mr Langton covered bees and how to care for them. This week Hampton boys and LEH girls took the stage for the long-awaited performance of this year’s Senior Musical, West Side Story. The 55 strong cast were supported by a full orchestra and a team of backstage assistants. Henry, who plays the French horn, was down in the pit with the orchestra:
Being in the pit is great fun. It’s quite small and it isn’t very spacious but it doesn’t really matter when you are playing great music. My favourite movement is probably Maria because it has a really nice horn part. It was a once in a lifetime experience. I don’t know many professional musicians who have played West Side Story at the age of twelve. Henry Ward – 2B
The U13 rugby teams may have had a tough start to the season but since their wins against St Benedict’s last week they have gone from strength to strength. Ben, Fraser and Max bring us more good news:
Following our win against St Benedict’s, the next week we played London Oratory School and St. Johns. We played St. Johns first. The match started with a tight first half but St. Johns couldn’t keep up in the second. With Ben Freer (2W) scoring a hat trick and Ethan Knight (2J) getting two, we won 30-15. The next match was against London Oratory. Again they couldn’t keep up with the ferocity of our rugby and we won 20-10. Last Monday we played Finchley School. After a long bus journey and a long walk to find the pitches, the game kicked off with Ethan Knight (2J) and Ben Freer (2W) getting two and Neo Sukhraj-Hammerl (2P) scoring a hat trick leading to a convincing win. The game ended at half time; 50-0. Ben Freer and Fraser Dunlop – 2W
Saturday the 15th of October was a great day for some exciting fixtures for Hampton School. My team, the under 13Bs, were lucky enough to play against two schools. Our first match was against Saint Johns and we managed to beat them 50-0! Tries were scored by Matthew Hibbert (2P), Fraser Dunlop (2W), Luke McNamara (2W), myself (Max Broughton – 2W) and maybe others that I may have missed out. Our second fixture was against Oratory, they were a much stronger side but we still managed to pull it off and we won 35-0. The tries in the second game were scored by Ollie Stokes (2W), Alex Lloyd (2B), Huw Harris (2J), Luke McNamara (2W), Matthew Hibbert (2P) and myself. Another successful week of rugby for our team and no tries conceded! Max Broughton – 2W
The footballers have had a busy end to the half-term too, with tough matches against Dr Challoner’s Grammar School for the A and B teams. The U13A team footballers were disappointed that their cup match was cancelled yesterday when the opposition pulled out. This unforeseen event does however have a silver lining – the boys progress automatically into round three of the ESFA tournament when they will play Dame Alice Owens School.
We finish this blog by congratulating all boys who have gained merits this half-term. Particular mention goes to Oliver Pulfrey Baker, Ethan Cox, Rohi Popham, Fred Darley, Roman Feron Clark, Jake Murray, Ethan Clapham, Edward Finnett, Sandy Mitchell, Jay Heading, Ben Wix, Maximilian Bublik, Jake Costen and Andrew Lees (10 merits), Jai Saha and Jonah Blake (20 merits) and Nayaaz Hashim and Ben Francis (30 merits).
