DSC_0144Hampton Fourth Year Thomas Hazell has scooped the school’s first Young Reporter Award, winning the Photojournalism Category for his news report and photograph covering the Race of Champions, a driving tournament for the world’s best racing drivers.

Thomas was one of six Young Reporter finalists from Hampton who were selected from 507 pupils across 62 participating schools in the South East. Students involved in the Newsquest scheme were required to complete and publish eight different online assignments in a range of categories over a period of eight months.

‘’This has been a great way to learn about journalism,’’ said Thomas, who won a place on a Journalism Day at Kingston University (where finalists produced a newspaper) as well as a £50 Waterstones voucher.

‘’I am delighted that Thomas has won an award in the face of some really tough competition,’’ said Tessa Bartholomew, English Teacher and Young Reporter Coordinator. ‘’The scheme offers teenage writers a rare opportunity to create and publish an online journalism portfolio for a real audience.’’

Other Hampton finalists were Alwaleed Al Doory, James Dowden, Samuel Peters,  Arjun Chadha and Hugh Dollery.
