Sixth Form Options

We believe that A Levels currently provide the best post-16 education model for our pupils and offer an exciting and broad selection of subject choices. Hamptonians achieve exceptional results at A Level which allow them to proceed to world-leading universities to study a broad range of subjects.

On joining the Sixth Form, pupils select their A Level subjects with guidance from the academic and careers teams. You will pursue these subjects in far greater depth than any you have taken so far in your school career and therefore it is essential that you enjoy them and that they interest you.

subject options

Pupils are encouraged to consider A Level choices that complement each other and are relevant for the path they may wish to take after Hampton. However, the elective programme, which is only studied for the Lower Sixth gives pupils an opportunity to try something completely different such as a linguistic, literary or creative option.

Electives

In addition to their three main A Levels (or four if studying Further Maths), all Hamptonians choose one of three Elective routes to take through their Lower Sixth year.

Our Electives programme provides pupils with exceptional opportunities to go beyond the confines of A Level specifications, allowing every pupil to take an individual journey of learning and exploration through the Sixth Form. Further details on the electives can be found below.

The School’s latest ISI Report commented on the intellectual rigour demonstrated by Hamptonians – their ‘insatiable thirst for knowledge’ and outstanding levels of skills and understanding in all areas of learning that are ‘well in advance of age-related expectations’.  Hampton Sixth Form allows pupils to focus on their chosen subjects and develop a deeper engagement and intellectual curiosity about topics.

Extension Classes

‘Extension’ learning is offered across most topics and provides a dynamic and enriching experience for pupils keen to go beyond the A-Level syllabus. Extension classes are invaluable preparation for pupils planning to take university admission tests and attend interviews.

Hampton Extended Learning Project (HELP)

The HELP project is an independent piece of work on a topic which you particularly enjoy. This research together with the analytical, organisational and critical thinking skills that you will learn, will not only enhance your A Level studies but also assist you in securing places at the world’s most competitive universities. These skills are also highly valued by employers looking for the next generation of innovators and leaders.

Super-curricular activities refer to learning experiences that go beyond the curriculum, focusing on deeper engagement with a subject and allowing pupils to follow their passion and curiosity in particular topics.

Olympiads

Olympiads are national, and international, competitions that allow exceptional minds to demonstrate their talent in a chosen field. Hamptonians enter Olympiads in Maths, the Sciences, Linguistics, and Computing. Olympiad exams typically feature complex and thought-provoking questions that require advanced and creative problem-solving skills.

Modern Language Debating Competitions

Senior linguists in French, German and Spanish have an excellent track record in national Modern Language Debating competitions. In recent years, our senior French debaters have been crowned national champions on two occasions.

Translation Competitions

The Modern Languages Department also encourages Sixth Form linguists to enter national translation challenges such as the Stephen Spender Prize and Athea Bell Prize.

Bank of England Competition

In the past few years, two senior economists have won the annual Bank of England’s Innovation Competition, securing themselves paid summer internships with the prestigious institution.

The Arkwright Scholarship

The presitgious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships support young people from across the UK who have the potential to be future leaders in engineering. Sixth Formers studying Design and Engineering and who wish to pursue a career in this field are supported to apply and we have had a number of successful candidates. Pupils receive £600 to support their technical courses and have access to a range of opportunities to learn more about engineering, including mentoring and industry-based experience days.

Hampton is one of the leading academic schools in the UK and our examination results at both A Level and GCSE are among the best in the country. We are very proud of the achievements of our pupils and their year-on-year success. Hamptonians’ excellent results allow them to move on to world-leading universities and educational institutions to study a wide range of subjects.

2024 A LEVEL Results

  • 41% of grades were at A*
  • 77% of grades were at A*-A
  • 46 boys achieved three or more A*s, of which 25 secured four of the very top grades
