Fourth Years have been volunteering with the humanitarian Missing Maps project as part of their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.
As part of the global initiative, volunteers use their spare time to map some of the most vulnerable places in the world in order to help charities and NGO’s respond to crises and provide aid.
Hamptonians have been mapping every week as part of their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, as well as catching up with fellow mappers, and DofE assessor Miss Brown, to compare progress and share expertise. As a team, the Hampton mappers have identified over 10,000 buildings in areas such as the city of Izmir, Turkey, which experienced a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in October 2020. Miss Brown says their work is impressive:
Our young mappers should be congratulated for committing to a task which is making a tangible difference to charities and their global humanitarian work. I am delighted that the 2021 DofE mapping project has been very successful. We are not recruiting further mappers at this stage but it is hoped that we might run similar volunteering initiatives in future years.
