Hampton’s Genocide80Twenty group has been working in partnership with more than 90 pupils from schools across the UK and in Geneva, Switzerland to publish a book called Unremembered Days which is described as ‘A vital history of modern genocide told through the true stories of tragically unforgettable but unremembered days’.
The young campaigners have worked in their spare time to research and chronicle 90 tragic days drawn from the Holocaust and other genocides so the events of those days are known about and not forgotten.
The forewords to the booklet have been written by eminent human rights advocates including: barrister Philippe Sands; Channel 4 News International Editor, Lindsey Hilsum; Olivia Marks-Woldman, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Memorial Trust; and Baroness Cox, founder and CEO of the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust
Aimed primarily at teachers, but available to all to read, the group hope that Unremembered Days can help young and old understand more about genocide because ‘If more people know, think and talk about genocide then maybe, there will be greater desire to stop it from happening again.”
The book has been published to coincide with the birthday of Rafael Lemkin, the man who coined the term genocide, on 24 June. On the day, Genocide80Twenty will be taking part in the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy’s Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Programme when they will be interviewing author Stephen Fry.
