Registration

All boys must be registered with Hampton to sit the entrance exam. To register your son, please complete our online registration form.

Please note that boys may only sit for 11+ or 13+ entry and not both. 

The Entrance Assessments

Entry to the First Year is via written exam, interview and school reference.

Candidates sit three papers:

English – Creative Writing & Comprehension (40 minutes)
Words & Reasoning (40 minutes)
Mathematics (45 minutes)

Supporting Reference

We shall write to your son’s current headteacher in advance of the Entrance exam to request a confidential report in support of his application.

Interviews

Candidates who demonstrate potential in the written assessments are invited for interview. The interviews play a key role in our decision-making and enable us to get to know the boys as people and to explore not only their academic and all-round potential, but also their ‘fit’ with our Hampton ethos and values. Candidates meet separately with two members of our teaching staff for around 30 minutes in total.

Offers & Acceptances

We typically welcome 170 new Hamptonians to our First Year each September. Places are awarded mid-February and acceptances required early March.

Please note that it is not possible to sit for both 11+ and 13+ entry. All boys are assessed in Year 6 and offers for both the 11+ and 13+ entry points are made in the February.

The Year 6 Pre-test

Our entrance assessments combine academic testing with a school reference and interview and aim to identify boys who will be happy and thrive at our School. Candidates sit a written Pre-test in Year 6 and are assessed in:

English – Creative Writing & Comprehension (40 minutes)
Words & Reasoning (40 minutes)
Maths (45 minutes)

The Year 7 Pre-test

Boys who are not successful in our Year 6 Pre-test are automatically invited to sit our Year 7 Pre-test when they are in Year 7.

The Year 7 Pre-test is similar in format to the Year 6 Pre-test but age adjusted.

Supporting Reference

A confidential reference is requested from candidates’ current school prior to the entrance exam.

The Interviews

Offers & Acceptance

Year 6 Pre-test: offers are made in February and acceptances required at the beginning of January of the following year
Year 7 Pre-test: offers are made approximately one month after the exam and acceptances required within 10 days of offer

Visit Us

We hold a Sixth Form Open Event during the autumn term which is designed to give you an overview of the School and provide you with the opportunity to meet the Head of Sixth Form and current Sixth Form students, as well as explore the School.

To register for entry into Sixth Form, please complete the online registration form.

Please note that as Hampton is a day school, consideration is only given to candidates who live within easy travelling distance of the School or who have a relative or guardian living within easy reach of the School and willing to take full responsibility for them. The School does not sponsor pupils under the Child Student Visa Scheme.

PERSONAL STATEMENT & FURTHER INFORMATION

Applicants will be asked to complete an Information Sheet providing details of their choice of A levels, hobbies and interests. Applicants will also be asked to write a one-page personal statement outlining their reasons for applying to Hampton, their university and career aspirations and how they will contribute to the Hampton School community.

A confidential report including predicted I/GCSE grades will also be requested from the applicant’s current school.

Assessment Day

The 16+ assessment process begins with an Assessment Day in the autumn term.  Candidates sit online aptitude tests in verbal, non-verbal and spatial reasoning, and written papers in each of the three subjects they wish to study for A Level.

Interview

Boys showing potential in the assessments are invited for interview. Applicants will usually meet with the Head of Sixth Form, a Deputy Head and a senior member of the Department for each of the subjects they wish to study at A Level.

OFFERS & ACCEPTANCES

Candidates who are successful in the admissions process will receive an unconditional offer but will be expected to achieve I/GCSE grades in line with those of a typical Hampton Fifth Year (Year 11) pupil (typically a minimum of six at Grade 8/9). Sporting, creative and other talents are also important as they form an integral part of the Sixth Form programme..
